Job Description

NOTE:

The posting will remain open until a successful candidate is identified.

Reporting to the Director, Law and Regulatory, this individual will provide legal direction, advice and support on a variety of routine and complex electricity regulatory matters primarily in the areas of rates and tariffs. This will involve interpretation of applicable legislation, rules and regulatory policy. The successful candidate may also provide legal direction, advice and support on facility applications and other regulatory and compliance matters.

The candidate will oversee the drafting of application‑related materials and act as legal counsel in regulatory hearings before the Alberta Utilities Commission.

The successful candidate will be eager to learn and be mentored by senior legal counsel and senior management, but also comfortable independently managing their own regulatory files. The candidate will have demonstrated organizational skills to prioritize a high‑volume workload in a time‑sensitive environment. The candidate will also have a practical approach to problem solving, a demonstrated ability to work with interdisciplinary teams, and ability to manage files to conclusion in line with budgeted parameters.

Responsibilities
  • Advise on a range of regulatory and associated legal matters primarily in the area of rates and tariff applications and on facility applications and compliance matters, as required
  • Draft regulatory applications and related regulatory filings
  • Advise on the legal and business implications of regulatory and/or legal approaches while anticipating legal and regulatory concerns and devising strategies to resolve them
  • Collaborate with other areas across the Law and Regulatory department to manage legal risk
  • Conduct legal research to support regulatory applications and related regulatory filings
  • Represent Alta Link in hearings as a member of a legal team in proceedings before the Alberta Utilities Commission
  • Manage external counsel and applicable budgets
  • Work closely with other Alta Link groups such as project management and operations to protect Alta Link's legal interests
  • Demonstrate and continuously build a solid understanding of regulatory law and practice and keep abreast of current developments and trends
  • Demonstrate key behaviors and meet identified expectations outlined in our four cultural pillars – one team, continuous improvement, customer focus and personal accountability
Qualifications
  • Qualified to practice law in Alberta and a member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta
  • A university degree in law (LLB; JD)
  • 2‑6 years of related legal experience. Proven ability/experience in above noted responsibilities
