Term Position from July 2026 to September 2027

Full time | Tuesday to Saturday | 37.5 hours per week

Shifts include working some evenings and statutory holidays

Reporting to the Director of Public Relations, the Manager, Volunteer Resources & Engagement is responsible for providing leadership to CHS’ Volunteer Program as well as working collaboratively with the Manager of Adoptions to maintain excellent customer service, education and enhanced animal welfare standards.

The successful candidate will possess exceptional interpersonal skills, a passion for volunteer management, helping people, and the ability to motivate, inspire, and develop team members.

Responsibilities
Leadership

Play an active role in supporting the Volunteer Coordinators with volunteer performance management including coaching, mentoring and progressive discipline.

Set a positive example for other members in the department by maintaining a positive attitude, actively managing emotional situations in a respectful, compassionate, and professional manner while providing exemplary customer service to all patrons of CHS, and by completing all tasks to the highest standard.

Plan and coordinate weekly department team meetings.

Lead morning “huddle” meetings.

Facilitate the training of team members in all aspects of their role including providing training documents, coaching, and coordinating internal and external professional development opportunities

Coach, mentor, assist, and provide leadership to employees including the Volunteer Coordinators.

Volunteer Management

Screen volunteer candidates and conduct interviews.

Assist Volunteer Coordinators with every aspect of the volunteer management cycle.

Build, execute, and maintain a robust shelter wide volunteer engagement strategy in collaboration with Director.

Collaborate with the Manager, Animal Intake & Foster on volunteer engagement and the planning and execution of awards, recognition, and CHS’ annual Volunteer and Foster Parent social events.

Assist with the coordination and facilitation of Group Volunteer Days.

Work collaboratively with the Director, Public Relations on the planning and execution of Special Event volunteer roles.

Oversee operational responsibilities in the department.

Support and help implement strategic volunteer related initiatives.

Work with other Directors, Managers, and Volunteer Coordinators to develop new volunteer roles.

Identify, develop, and implement new processes to further enhance departmental efficiencies.

Manage and maintain schedules for the Volunteer and Reception teams in collaboration with the Manager of Adoptions to ensure full coverage on the public end of the building.

Complete bi-weekly time sheets in Payworks and manage employee accruals and entitlements.

Work with other departments for the benefit of the animals by assisting staff when and if time permits.

Act as ambassador for the Society both internally and with external partners and stakeholders.

Promote a culture of volunteer engagement by building and maintaining relationships with volunteers, participating in volunteer recognition – including monthly and annual awards.

Promote a culture of philanthropy by building and maintaining relationships with donors and participating in donor stewardship activities.

Maintain a culture of positivity and openness through face-to-face communication, active listening, and collaboration.

Promote teamwork and comradery by taking initiative to assist teams outside of designated department when help is needed.

Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

High school diploma.

Post-secondary education in Volunteer Administration, leadership, or management considered a strong asset.

Minimum 2 years’ experience in a professional leadership role successfully leading a team.

Professional experience working in the field of volunteer management considered a strong asset.

Flexibility to work days, evenings, weekends, overtime as required, and some statutory holidays.

Previous animal handling experience…
