The Opportunity

The Executive Director serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the organization, responsible for providing leadership, strategic development and direction, and oversight to support victims of domestic violence and their families. The Executive Director is responsible for establishing and executing major goals and strategic objectives for the organization. They ensure the effective delivery of programs, foster collaboration across sectors, and advocate for the needs of victims within the broader community.

They represent the organization to regulatory bodies, other agencies, community and civic organizations, donors, funders and supporters, and the general public.

Key Responsibilities Leadership
  • Participate with the Board of Directors in developing a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization
  • Foster effective teamwork between the Board, the Executive Director, and staff/volunteers
  • Act as a spokesperson for the organization
Operational planning and management
  • Develop an operational plan which incorporates goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction of the organization
  • Oversee the efficient and effective day‑to‑day operation of the organization
  • Draft policies for the approval of the Board and prepare procedures to implement the organizational policies; review existing policies on an annual basis and recommend changes to the Board as appropriate
Program planning and management
  • Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of the organization's programs and services
  • Ensure that the programs and services offered by the organization contribute to the organization's mission and vision
  • Monitor the day‑to‑day delivery of the programs and services of the organization to maintain or improve quality
Human resources planning and management
  • Determine staffing requirements for organizational management and program delivery
  • Oversee the performance management process for all positions which includes monitoring the performance of staff on an on‑going basis and ensuring annual performance reviews are completed by management
  • Coach and mentor staff as appropriate to improve performance and ensure compliance with policies and procedures
Financial planning and management
  • Work with staff and the Board (Finance) to prepare a comprehensive budget
  • Work with the Board to secure adequate funding for the operation of the organization
  • Administer the funds of the organization according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cash flow of the organization
  • Provide the Board with comprehensive, regular reports on the revenues and expenditures of the organization
Community relations/advocacy
  • Communicate with stakeholders to keep them informed of the work of the organization and to identify changes in the community served by the organization
  • Establish strong working relationships, seamless communication and collaborative arrangements with community groups, police, RCMP, justice, funders, politicians, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the organization
Position Qualifications Education
  • Post‑secondary education in a related field, master’s degree preferred
  • A combination of experience and education will be considered
  • Registration with related professional bodies (Social Work, Psychology) an asset
Knowledge, skills and abilities
  • 5‑10 years of senior management experience in a non‑profit organization preferably in the social services sector
