The Position

Our Asset Management Business Unit is growing. We manage the engineering, production operations, liability closure, financial accounting, production accounting, land, HSE, and regulatory oversight of junior to mid-sized E&P companies ranging from 100 to 8,000 BOE per day.

Sproule ERCE is seeking an energetic, self‑motivated, and proficient Manager, Environmental and Asset Retirement Liabilities to join our Asset Management team reporting to the Head of Liability Management. This role supports Sproule ERCE across multiple clients, managing all aspects relating to environmental compliance, ARO data management, remediation, reclamation, and closure activities across wells, facilities, and pipelines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Track and maintain precise Asset Retirement Obligation (ARO) data, ensuring alignment with financial forecasts and operational lifecycle stages.
  • Oversee Sproule ERCE’s Asset Management remediation and reclamation projects for wells, facilities, and pipeline assets, including both operated and non‑operated licenses.
  • Develop and implement risk‑based environmental strategies focused on ARO management, prioritization of site closures, and liability reduction.
  • Support environmental compliance and regulatory programs to ensure full adherence to relevant regulations.
  • Prepare and submit records of site condition reports, remedial action plans, and corrective action plans to ensure compliance.
  • Standardize reporting frameworks and summary dashboards for Liability Management and Environmental programs across multiple Asset Management clients. Implement key processes and related workflow improvements and quality assurance.
  • Lead technically complex initiatives such as site remediation, groundwater monitoring, land reclamation, and compliance with water crossing regulations.
  • Collaborate with internal teams including operations, engineering, finance, and surface land to embed environmental considerations into overall business planning and decision‑making.
  • Translate regulatory and technical risks into clear financial and operational insights for client senior leadership and ownership stakeholders.
  • Provide management and technical direction on all Sproule ERCE managed closure activities and environmental aspects across multiple clients.
  • Support Managing Director and Head of Liability Management in planning client’ annual ARO targets, budget allocation, and reports with detailed analysis, forecasting, and lessons learned.
  • Project manage and/or support client and asset due diligence reviews with remediation, reclamation, and environmental considerations including land‑use, regulatory compliance, equipment decommissioning, and pipeline abandonment obligations. Assist in evaluating risks and ensuring adherence to all related environmental and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop comprehensive liability management strategies based on AER Directives 020, 088 and Alberta Environmental Site Assessment Standards.
  • Work with Senior Regulatory, Environmental and Closure Technician to generate and approve Authorization for Expenditure (AFE) documents. Review, approve, and track costs associated with project expenditures. Report workplan progress versus budget clients to ensure alignment with ARO targets.
  • Lead and manage opportunities related to government programs focused on site closure and funding acquisition. Drive proposal development, stakeholder engagement, and compliance to secure and execute government funding effectively.
