Since 1970, Samaritan’s Purse has helped meet the needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing God’s love through His Son, Jesus Christ.
The Mass Care Program is a specialized humanitarian response designed to provide life-sustaining services to large groups of people displaced by natural or man-made disasters. Its primary goal is to ensure the immediate survival, dignity, and well-being of evacuees through the rapid deployment of shelter, food, and essential supplies.
As the Mass Care Assistant Manager, you will support the Canadian Disaster Relief Manager in the readiness, activation, and 24/7 operation of the Mass Care Program during large-scale emergencies. This position maintains the deployment readiness of mobile Mass Care units, leads the recruitment, and supervision of program responders and volunteers, coordinates site operations with emergency management authorities, host facilities, and local churches.
As an integral member of the team, this role will also support SPC’s mission through participation in the daily prayer ministry.
The successful candidate will fulfill a full-time 1-year contract position in the Calgary head office. This position includes benefits of life insurance, medical/dental and short-term/long-term disability, RRSP contributions after one year of employment, and 15 vacation days per year to start.
Responsibilities- Ensures all mass care services are delivered with dignity, compassion, and respect for the diverse needs of evacuees, in alignment with the organization’s mission and values
- Oversees the deployment readiness, maintenance, and inventory of mass care units, including vehicles and specialized equipment
- Conducts site assessments and manages the setup, layout, and ongoing operation of evacuation centres, determining needs, suitability, capacity, accessibility, and safety requirements
- Oversees the setup, layout, and ongoing operation of mass care centers, including evacuee registration, sleeping areas, feeding coordination, privacy screening, and accessibility considerations
- Assists in the recruitment, screening, training, and retention of mass care responders, and provides on-site supervision, orientation, scheduling, and day-to-day direction within a 24/7 operation
- Acts as an on-site liaison with local Emergency Support Services, Emergency Operations Centres, provincial emergency management agencies, host facility staff, and partner organizations
- Coordinates with local churches and Volunteer & Church Relations staff to facilitate hospitality, volunteer support, and emotional and spiritual care for evacuees
- Ensures all operations adhere to privacy legislation, service agreements with government partners, and Provincial Occupational Health and Safety standards
- Monitors and reports occupancy, resource consumption, and operational statistics, and maintains the records required for cost recovery, invoicing, and after-action reporting
- Appropriately coaches and escalates high-needs cases with the Program Manager, including elderly residents, medical and mental health needs, lost identification, and unaccompanied people to Emergency Support Services and community supports
- Leads preparedness exercises, maintains training curriculum, and remains available for rapid deployment to disaster sites
