Aquatic Biologist

Compensation: $35 to $43 per hour, commensurate with experience, skills, and geographic location.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to routine and complex biological investigations, including construction monitoring; fish and fish habitat assessments; and aquatic effects assessments (e.g., benthic invertebrate and aquatic ecology projects) in field and office settings.
  • Represent Onterris on project sites, communicating with regulators and internally across diverse technical teams.
  • Contribute to a collaborative team of biologists and aquatic scientists, sharing knowledge and best practices.
  • Apply current scientific knowledge to collect accurate and precise field data.
  • Actively participate in maintaining Onterris’ strong safety culture.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (or technical diploma) in environmental science, biology, or a related field.
  • Eligibility for a professional designation in a relevant organization (e.g., P. Biol., P. Ag.).
  • 2-5 years of consulting experience in aquatic science or environmental consulting.
  • Familiarity with regulatory guidelines (e.g., Environmental Quality Guidelines for Alberta Surface Water, Canadian Water Quality Guidelines for the Protection of Aquatic Life) – an asset.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulatory acts (e.g., Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Impact Assessment Act, Fisheries Act) as they pertain to aquatic environments – an asset.
  • Experience with aquatic effects monitoring at construction sites and industrial facilities.
  • Skills in aquatic study design, field sampling protocols, and logistics coordination.
  • Experience summarizing field activities and environmental information.
  • Excellent written communication and technical report‑writing skills.
  • Valid class 5 driver’s licence with no driving restrictions.
Work Environment and

Physical Requirements
  • Sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Lifting 50lb several times a day.
  • Overhead lifting of more than 20lb.
  • Work in an office environment when not deployed on emergency response.
  • Often work outdoors in hot or cold environments, including extreme weather (sunlight, rain, wind).
  • May occasionally work shifts up to 24hours in duration.
