Description

The Department of Psychiatry in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Student Internship
. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 4 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Pan-Canadian Initiative Linking Genomic, Environmental and Mental Health Data in Children and Youth or Pan-GEM is a national research project that brings together research studies from across Canada to explore how genetics and the environment work together to shape youth mental health. We're bringing together teams from across Canada and want young people involved in helping shape how we explain and share this work.

We're looking for one young adult (16 to 25 years old) who is passionate about mental health and research to join the Pan-GEM youth project as an intern. A Pan-GEM youth intern is a student learner who will work with a Pan-GEM team member to gain practical, hands-on experience in research while receiving training in academic writing, research methods, ethics, cultural sensitivity, and genetics.

There will also be opportunities for career development.

Genetics is the study of how genes and traits are passed down from parents to children, while genomics looks at all of a person's genes and how they work together and with the environment to influence health and traits. For example, two friends might both have genes that could make them good runners, but only the one who practices becomes fast because habits and environments affect how genes work.

Pharmacogenetics is the study of how your genes affect the way your body responds to medicines (e.g., which medications is likely to work best or may cause side effects).

Learn about and help review information and scientific papers about policies related to youth mental health, ethics and pharmacogenetics, sharing your findings and recommendations through written reports. Help design simple questionnaires or interview and discussion guides for small group conversations (focus groups). Assist with note taking; observation and support during focus groups or interviews. Work with other youth interns and Pan-GEM team members.

Attend weekly check-ins and team meetings. Share your learnings at the end of the internship about your experience.

Recurring Part-time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.
