Electrician – Facilities Management

The Facilities Management department is hiring a full‑time regular electrician to install, maintain, repair and operate electrical power and lighting systems across all University property. The position reports to the Supervisor, Maintenance and is performed under minimal supervision.

Responsibilities include work in confined spaces, on scaffolds or lifts up to 4 metres, and with heavy lifting of up to 25 kg. Physical demands include climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials, year‑round indoor and outdoor. The role may involve emergency callouts and stand‑by duty.

Responsibilities
  • Complete assigned installations, alterations, maintenance and repairs to a broad range of electrical equipment and systems.
  • Perform work in compliance with the Canadian Electrical Code, University of Calgary standards, policies and procedures, and applicable building codes.
  • Communicate with customers, contractors, manufacturers, suppliers and other trade staff to successfully complete tasks.
  • Explore innovative solutions to minimise electrical interruptions of building systems and equipment.
  • Maintain records, as‑built blueprints and schematic diagrams when altering existing or new systems.
  • Analyse information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  • Monitor and review information from materials, events or the environment to detect or assess problems.
  • Develop specific goals and plans to prioritise, organise and accomplish work.
Summary of

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure work is completed in compliance with University specifications, standards and procedures.
  • Maintain knowledge of all existing University structures and systems, and become familiar with new trends, techniques, codes and equipment.
  • Use and maintain equipment, work spaces and tools supplied by the University in a safe working order.
  • Manage own time effectively and keep the supervisor informed of activities and progress.
  • Provide customer service to internal stakeholders according to university and departmental standards.
  • Interact respectfully with co‑workers, supervisors, contractors, consultants, suppliers, students and other members of the University community.
  • Show discretion, confidentiality and attention to detail.
  • Willingness to learn, adapt to change and participate in own training and development.
  • Meet all ongoing OHS initiatives, follow University OHS policies, procedures and legislation, and ensure personal, public and co‑worker safety in hazardous situations.
  • Act in accordance with the University of Calgary "Statement on Principles of Conduct" when representing the University.
  • Maintain regular work attendance and timely reporting for shift start.
  • Maintain appropriate personal hygiene, attire and grooming for the work environment.
Qualifications / Requirements
  • Provincial or interprovincial Electrical Trade Certification with 3–5 years of experience.
  • Familiarity with recognized practices, techniques, tools, test equipment, instrumentation and safety procedures in the electrical trade.
  • Experience in commercial, industrial and institutional electrical applications with a good understanding of the current Canadian Electrical Code.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic diagrams, shop drawings, specifications and maintenance manuals.
  • Knowledge in the installation, maintenance and operation of 120/208, 277/480, 347/600 volt power distribution; incandescent, fluorescent, and high‑intensity discharge lighting and control; standby generators; battery banks; UPS emergency power systems; motor and motor control; heating and cooling control; variable‑frequency drives and soft‑start motor starters; troubleshooting, repair and retrofitting of electrical systems.
  • Experience (asset) in 2,300 volts up to 13,200 volts power distribution; electrical project coordination from inception to completion; design, estimating, as‑built and record keeping; harmonic distortion, power quality monitoring and mitigation; power metering.
  • Ability to work on ladders, in confined spaces, and in all weather conditions.
