The ENMAX Powerline Technician Apprenticeship is a paid four-year skilled trades program that combines hands-on field experience with formal apprenticeship training. You'll learn alongside experienced Journeypersons, work on critical electrical infrastructure that powers Calgary, and build the skills needed for a rewarding long-term career in the utility industry.

What You'll Experience

  • Working outdoors year-round as part of a skilled crew

  • Building and maintaining the electrical system that serves Calgary customers

  • Learning overhead, underground, and network distribution work

  • Developing specialized skills through hands-on training and apprenticeship education

  • Working with modern equipment and emerging utility technologies

  • Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to the Province of Alberta, ENMAX Corporation, A.E.U.C. (Alberta Electrical Utility Code) and Occupational Health and Safety rules and regulations

  • Ensure proper care and use of vehicles, equipment and work sites

  • PLT Apprentices will work as part of a team to safely perform work on the energized electric system alongside ENMAX Power Line Technicians, Power Systems Electricians and Civil Personnel.

  • Receive training to work safely in confined and restricted spaces

  • Learn skills in live line technique using rubber gloves on voltages up to, and including 25kv

  • Recognize, assess and control potentially hazardous situations in the work environment

  • Work safely in all conditions and possess knowledge of Industry standard safe working practices

  • Install remove various types of electrical and communication cables through ENMAX Network Duct systems and Transformer vaults

  • Perform underground splicing, terminating and cable pulling

  • Terminate and maintain primary conductors, quick splice, H Splice, BLR’s, reducing taps, etc

  • Terminate and maintain secondary conductors and installing limiters, fuse’s, moles on Network distributed Grid system (Energized or De-energized)

  • Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma Including Math 20-2 and Physics 20 (or equivalent)

  • Valid Class 5 (Non GDL) Province of Alberta Driver’s license with no more than 6 demerits

  • Salary: As outlined in the IBEW Collective Agreement (based on January 1, 2026 rates):

  • 1st year apprentice – 60% of Journeyperson rate ($41.25 per hour)

  • 2nd year apprentice - 65% of Journeyperson rate ($44.69 per hour)

  • 3rd year apprentice - 75% of Journeyperson rate ($51.56 per hour)

  • 4th year apprentice - 85% of Journeyperson rate ($58.44 per hour)

  • Journeyperson Rate - $68.75 per hour (Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, participants may qualify to work as a Journeyperson Powerline Technician, supporting the construction and maintenance of ENMAX's electrical distribution system.
