The Ice Technician is responsible for daily ice resurfacing, preventive maintenance, arena cleanliness, equipment operation, and supporting venue conversions.

This role ensures that all ice sheets and facility conditions meet the performance and cleanliness standards as well as safety expectations of community programming, high‑performance training, national team camps, competitions, and special events.

What you will be doing:
Ice Surface Preparation and Maintenance
  • Conduct resurfacing on the ice using the Olympia, ensuring the highest standard ice conditions.
  • Perform daily edging, chipping, scraping, flooding, and patch repairs.
  • Monitor and maintain proper ice temperature, humidity, and refrigeration settings.
  • Adjust ice conditions based on sport requirements and facility changes
  • Inspect ice for hazards, imperfections, or wear; take corrective action immediately.
  • Assist with installation and removal of ice, including painting and/or installing cloth lines and logos.
Arena Operations and Maintenance
  • Set up and tear down boards, glass, nets, dasher boards, benches, and ancillary equipment.
  • Working alongside, ensuring that rink attendants are completing required shift duties while meeting world class standards.
  • Inspect and maintain ice resurfacing machines and related tools. Including greasing, blade changes, battery maintenance, etc.
  • Routine facility maintenance (changing lights, painting, repairs, etc.).
  • Report mechanical issues promptly and assist in troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Ensure arena cleanliness of common areas including floors, player areas, and dressing rooms,
  • Assist with ice installations, arena conversions, and major arena maintenance projects.
  • Maintain hockey nets and other sport equipment.
Icehouse
  • Assist and lead work in the icehouse, prepping both bobsled and luge tracks.
  • Lead and direct part time team members who assist in the icehouse.
  • Installation of ice surfaces.
  • Cutting in drive lines.
  • Test and troubleshoot the timing systems for the tracks.
  • Document pre-use inspections of the facility, equipment, and ice prior to any sessions daily.
Quality Control and excellence
  • Make adjustments to the ice resurfacer to ensure the optimum ice conditions.
  • Conduct routine measurements of ice depth and temperature.
  • Identify and correct surface imperfections, cracks, soft spots, and air pockets.
  • Maintain detailed logs of maintenance activities and environmental conditions.
Safety and Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with OH&S, WHMIS, and refrigeration safety regulations.
  • Conduct safety inspections of arena boards, glass, and ice access points.
  • Maintain accurate logs, documentation, incident reports, and equipment records.
  • Participate in emergency response procedures, including ammonia safety protocols.
What you bring:
  • Minimum Arena Operator Level 1 is an asset.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in arena ice-making and rink operations.
  • Understanding of ammonia refrigeration systems and safety protocols.
  • Experience operating ice resurface rs (Olympia and LVR experience is an asset) and maintaining ice equipment.
  • Arena concert/event setup experience considered an asset.
  • Forklift and aerial work platform experience considered an asset.
