The Mechanic. Operations & Maintenance, as a part of Facilities Management, is responsible to ensure that building structures and systems for all University owned and leased properties are operated and maintained in a reliable, efficient and cost effective manner to ensure a safe and comfortable work environment in which campus users can carry out their activities.

The Department of Grounds and Roads within the Facilities Management is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Mechanic. Operations & Maintenance, as a part of Facilities Management, is responsible to ensure that building structures and systems for all University owned and leased properties are operated and maintained in a reliable, efficient and cost effective manner to ensure a safe and comfortable work environment in which campus users can carry out their activities.

The Motor Pool is a primary facility for service and repairs of all owned and leased University vehicles and trailers, as well as some off-road equipment. The Mechanic, Motor Pool reports to the Manager, Fleet Operations. Work is performed under minimal supervision.

This position is a part of the AUPE Collective Bargaining Unit. The normal shift is 7.5 hours per day, five days per week, usually Monday through Friday, however, transfers to other shifts, with notice, is a possibility. Compressed work weeks may be necessary in peak times in order to assist with large workloads. Callouts to the campus can also be expected during emergencies.

This position may require work to be carried out with the following conditions: using lifts of heights up to 4 metres, heavy lifting, year round indoor and outdoor responsibilities, possible exposure to carbon monoxide fumes and various shop related chemicals. This is a hands on job which is sometimes noisy and dirty, and there is some risk of injury involved in working with power tools and near exhaust gases.

• The Mechanic, Motor Pool is responsible for the daily operations of the Motor Pool. The operational requirements include performing routine services and repairs for the University Fleet, which is made up of on-road vehicles, off-road mobile equipment, and trailers.
• Diagnosing, testing and repairing: engines, steering systems, braking systems, drive trains, suspensions, electrical systems and air-conditioning systems.
• Purchasing services from reliable, reputable companies for any repair work which the Motor Pool shop is not equipped to service.
• Organizing and scheduling of vehicle, off-road equipment and trailer maintenance/repairs through contact with campus vehicle users.
• Ensuring that Motor Pool records are properly maintained according to processes, policies and procedures of the University of Calgary Facilities department, following University guidelines.
• Cooperating and coordinating work with other Facilities Management units and the U of C departments.
• Other job related duties as required.

• Ensures the work assigned is completed as required and is in compliance with the University specifications, standards and procedures.
• Responsible to become familiar with all existing University structures and systems, as well as acquire knowledge of new trends, techniques, codes and equipment as they become relevant to the operation of the University.
• Ensures that equipment, work spaces, and tools supplied by the University are used for their intended purposes, and are maintained in a safe working order.
• Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate supervisor is kept informed of activities, and progress of work.
