Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care. This includes executing providers' orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting in examinations and treatment of patients. The RN applies necessary nursing and supervisory techniques in the care, treatment, and referrals of residents. This role requires performing all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure. Appropriate nursing skills must be applied in the care and treatment of residents.

Attendance during sick calls with the physician is required to examine residents. The RN will prepare a list of residents for examination and prepare the examining room and equipment. Responsibilities include operating pill call, dispensing medication, and documenting as required by applicable policies and procedures. The RN will call the providers for medication and treatment orders during emergencies. Examination and assessment of new residents with illnesses or injuries is necessary, as well as referring them to emergency care when required.

Emergency procedures must be performed as needed, with notification to the provider for treatment orders. Coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel is important to meet various needs. Monitoring inpatient hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate is required. The RN will provide guidance to and supervise nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff. Maintaining good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, and outside provider agencies is essential.

Utilizing established policies and procedures in decision-making is necessary while using sound independent judgment. Regular evaluations of medical services must be conducted to prevent inappropriate use or duplication. Maintaining the security and confidentiality of all medical records is crucial. Assistance with the review of medical files will be required to determine if all provided services are documented. Close monitoring of all potential catastrophic illnesses is essential.

Audits of pharmacy use for adherence to formulary must be completed as directed. Compliance with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances, is required. Observing and recording resident behavior is part of the duties. Inspections of the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband must be conducted. Providing health counseling and health education, both individually and in groups, is part of the role.

Assistance with preparing and maintaining various operational records, reports, and logs is necessary, using appropriate grammar. Reading, analyzing, comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures and regulations is required. Processing and responding to lawsuits via corporate counsel must be performed, along with attending court hearings when necessary. Facilitating accreditation of the medical program by providing efficient and appropriate medical services is important.

Preparation and dissemination of safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures is necessary. Appropriate actions must be taken in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
