Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care. Responsibilities include executing Licensed Independent Provider orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting with examinations and treatment of patients. The RN applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates/residents. The role includes performing all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure.

Nursing skills are applied in the care and treatment of inmates/residents. The RN attends sick calls with the physician to see inmates/residents, prepares a list of those to be examined, and prepares the examining room and equipment. The RN operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies and procedures. Communication with Licensed Independent Providers is essential for medication and treatment orders, as well as emergencies.

Examination and assessment of new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries is performed, referring them to emergency facilities as required. Emergency procedures are carried out as needed, with the Licensed Independent Provider notified for treatment orders. The RN assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel and ensures their needs are addressed. Monitoring of inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases occurs as directed.

The RN provides guidance, supervision, and monitoring of care furnished by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff. Maintaining good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside agencies is important. Established corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures are utilized in decision-making, while also exercising sound independent judgment. Regular evaluation of medical services is conducted to prevent inappropriate use or duplication.

Maintaining absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records is crucial. The RN assists with the review of medical files to ensure all provided services are documented. Potential catastrophic illnesses are closely monitored. Pharmacy use is audited for adherence to formulary as directed or required. Compliance with applicable pharmacy laws, particularly those regarding controlled substances, is mandatory. Observation and documentation of inmate/resident behavior are part of the responsibilities.

Inspections of the medical unit are done for items that could serve as contraband and secure storage or safe disposal of supplies and equipment is required. Health counseling and education are provided on an individual or group basis as required. The RN aids in preparing and maintaining a variety of standard narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records, reports, and logs.

Reading, analyzing, comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, legal and non-legal documents is necessary. Processing and responding to lawsuits and attending court hearings when needed is part of the job. Facilitation of accreditation processes for the medical program by providing approved and appropriate medical services is required when applicable. Safety and accident reports are prepared and disseminated as required by policies and procedures.

Appropriate action is taken in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
