COUNTYWIDE PROMOTUNITY! This position is only for open current Nevada County employees who have completed a 12-month probationary period. The Nevada County Treasurer-Tax Collector's office is seeking an experienced, diligent, and forward-thinking Senior Accountant to take a lead role in managing the County's Treasury Division. This is a high-impact, professional accounting position that combines advanced governmental accounting responsibilities with treasury management, investment oversight, banking operations, and financial systems leadership.

Examples of Duties
  • Coordinate daily treasury activities, such as cash management, warrant control, banking relationships, cashiering, and internal controls.
  • Perform and oversee complex investment accounting, including amortization schedules, interest earnings, gain/loss reporting, and portfolio activity.
  • Analyze investment opportunities, manage pooled funds and liquidity needs, and ensure the County has sufficient cash for operational and strategic purposes.
  • Complete all daily and monthly banking activities, including running reports, reconciling multiple bank accounts, and researching discrepancies.
  • Develop, write, and introduce accounting and treasury policies, procedures, and internal controls that support secure and efficient operations.
  • Design, improve, and document accounting and financial management systems; partner with IT to implement new technology solutions.
  • Prepare complex accounting, financial, statistical, and narrative reports for Treasury, management, County leadership, departments, and external agencies.
  • Build strong working relationships with internal departments, special districts, banks, brokers, and regulatory agencies.
  • Oversee, instruct, guide, and assess accounting and treasury personnel, encouraging precision, collaboration, and ongoing development.
  • Represent the Treasurer–Tax Collector's Office in internal and external meetings, provide financial expertise, respond to collaborators, and deliver presentations.
  • Travel between County facilities and banking institutions using a County vehicle, as needed.
Knowledge and Skills Required
  • Possess a solid background in governmental accounting and advanced treasury functions.
  • Enjoy solving complex financial problems and designing systems that improve accuracy and efficiency.
  • Can interpret and apply laws, regulations, GAAP, GASB standards, and County policies to daily operations.
  • Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, including presenting complex information in an understandable way.
  • Excel in relationship-building and collaboration across departments, agencies, banks, and the public.
  • Display integrity, professionalism, accountability, and a commitment to public service.
  • Lead teams with motivation, fairness, and a focus on staff development and performance excellence.
Education and Experience Required
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience from an accredited university with major coursework in accounting or a closely related field; and
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional or journey-level accounting or auditing experience, ideally in governmental accounting, at a level similar to Nevada County's Accountant II; or
  • Equivalent professional treasury experience that includes cash flow management, investment accounting, or oversight of large-scale financial operations.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license within 30 days of hire.
  • Certified California Municipal Treasurer designation required within two years of hire.
