Location: French Camp

This examination is being given to fill 4 part‑time vacancies at San Joaquin County General Hospital and to establish an eligible list to fill future vacancies. Pre‑Employment Background:
Potential new hires must successfully pass a pre‑employment background investigation as a condition of employment. Final appointment cannot be made until the eligible employee has completed the background process.

Typical Duties
  • Asks questions of patients and/or their relatives; enters information into the hospital system; screens material for completeness and accuracy.
  • Matches account numbers with financial codes; verifies insurance or Medic‑Cal coverage; checks insurance I.D. cards and Medic‑Cal labels; verifies Medic‑Cal/Medicare coverage.
  • Obtains signatures on appropriate forms; types I.D. cards and stamps patient records; posts or verifies information.
  • Explains rules, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to patient registration.
  • Directs patients to appropriate office, clinic or treatment center; may maintain a system of clinic appointments.
  • Operates standard office machines such as computer terminals, automatic copiers, calculators and microfiche readers.
  • May act as lead worker; may check and review work of others; may train others as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years of general office clerical work, including at least one year of collecting financial and personal information from patients and/or families in a doctor’s office, medical clinic or acute care hospital.
  • One year of business training in an approved school or training program may be substituted for six months of general clerical experience.
Knowledge
  • Basic Medicare, Medic‑Cal and private insurance eligibility requirements.
  • Basic layout of San Joaquin General Hospital and locations of treatment centers and offices.
  • Public relations techniques; filing and record‑keeping systems used in registering patients.
  • Language mechanics.
Ability
  • Follow oral and written directions; read and understand job‑related material.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; communicate effectively.
  • Work well under pressure; deal tactfully with individuals in stressful situations.
  • Match names and numbers; explain hospital policies, procedures and related regulations to the public.
  • Operate office equipment, including computer terminals.

Selection Procedures

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be referred to the hiring department for further selection or may be required to take a written examination. The top candidates after examination may be referred for further selection. Testing accommodations under the ADA and physical or drug‑screening examinations may be required. The county pays for the physical examination and initial drug screen.
