Job Description

Under direct supervision by a Company or Chief Officer maintain fire department apparatus and equipment; respond to fire alarms, emergency calls and non-emergency calls to protect life and property; provide aid during emergency and non-emergency calls for service including structure fires, traffic collisions, hazardous materials incidents, building collapses, and wildland fires; operate a variety of fire suppression and life-saving equipment; conduct and participate in fire training, fire prevention, public education, station and equipment maintenance activities;

assist in all phases of fire suppression; perform related duties, as required. This position is considered FLSA non-exempt.

The term ("District") used throughout this job description means The Morongo Valley Community Services District.

This position reports directly to the Fire Captain and the Chief Officers. District fire personnel at the rank of Firefighter/Paramedic, Firefighter, and Reserve Firefighter report to this position (Fire Apparatus Engineer).

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Drive, operate, and maintain all firefighting and suppression apparatus and equipment.
  • Place apparatus in operation, lay hose, calculate, and monitor hydraulic conditions.
  • Direct engine hook-up, set up, and adjust controls to ensure proper water flow.
  • Operate water tender trucks including water shuttle operations and drafting.
  • Perform routine and minor repairs, as needed including pumping apparatus and aerial ladders.
  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls to protect life and property.
  • Assist in all phases of fire suppression and rescue operations.
  • Ventilate and enter burning structures to extinguish fires and rescue victims.
  • Operate pneumatic and auxiliary equipment such as generators and pumps.
  • Provide emergency and non-emergency medical service, as needed.
  • Respond to non-emergency calls for service, as necessary.
  • Operate and maintain fire station, fire station grounds, and associated equipment.
  • Initiates orders for supplies and repairs, assist in writing specifications for safety clothing and equipment.
  • Participate in testing all department equipment such as hoses, ladders, nozzles, ropes, protective breathing apparatus, and protective clothing.
  • Perform fire code inspections at engine company level.
  • Assist in the enforcement of fire prevention codes and ordinances.
  • Conduct investigations of fire scenes to determine the origin.
  • Prepare, submit, and maintain reports on fire suppression activities, incidents, apparatus maintenance and inventory.
  • Participate in training exercises, develop skills in fire suppression, medical aid, apparatus operation, physical fitness, and other related areas.
  • Provide support in the development of staff through training exercises and classroom instruction.
  • Perform salvage and overhaul operations to preserve property and remove hazards.
  • Respond to, assess, and mitigate hazardous materials incidents.
  • Temporarily acts as company officer in the absence of an assigned captain.
  • Maintain awareness of new development in the field of fire suppression/prevention and other fields relevant to assigned responsibilities.
  • Follow the Chain of Command.
  • Participate in public education activities related to fire department functions and Community Risk Reduction initiatives and techniques.
  • Attend and participate, as needed, District board meetings when on-duty.
  • Attend and participate in fire department auxiliary board meetings when on-duty.
  • May be required to serve as Duty Officer as needed to include weekends and holidays as directed.
Minimum Qualifications

Must be at least 21 years old and possess a High School diploma or equivalent supplemented by specialized firefighter and emergency medicine/paramedic training. Successful completion of a California State Fire Marshal Accredited Basic Firefighter Academy and/or possess a Firefighter I and II certificate and two years full-time experience as a Firefighter EMT or Firefighter/Paramedic. Prior experience in fire suppression, rescue, and Emergency Medical Services/Paramedic is required.
