San Mateo Medical Center is seeking a General Dentist
. The current vacancy is a full-time, regular position.

San Mateo Medical Center is a division of San Mateo County Health. Dental services are integrated with the health system, with access to electronic health records, medical dictation and collaboration with dental and medical specialists across the hospital and satellite clinics.

In addition to being a full-scope Medical Center and Hospital, San Mateo Medical Center operates five dental clinics located in:

  • San Mateo (39th Avenue Clinic)
  • Redwood City (Fair Oaks Health Center- FOHC)
  • Daly City (Daly City Clinic)
  • Coastside Clinic (Half Moon Bay)
  • Mobile Dental Clinic (MDC)

These clinics treat children and adults, including homeless and transitional populations, as well as patients with HIV.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a skilled and compassionate general dentist with at least three years of clinical experience, preferably in a public health or FQHC setting. The candidate will also possess the following:

  • Strong skills in all phases of general dentistry
  • Comfortable treating medically complex and underserved populations
  • Ability to work in an integrated care environment using EHR (e.g. EPIC) and collaborate with medical teams
  • Commitment to patient-centered, culturally responsive care
  • Experience supervising staff and/or teaching residents or students
  • Strong organizational skills with accurate documentation and sound prescribing practices
  • Flexibility to work across multiple clinic sites and varied schedules
Duties / Responsibilities
  • Conduct medical/dental examinations and make diagnoses.
  • Determine and prescribe appropriate treatment and/or medication for dental disorders.
  • Perform prophylactic dentistry services.
  • Treat mouth diseases, perform oral surgery, prescribe drugs in connection with dental treatment and instruct patients in oral hygiene.
  • Operate dental radiology equipment.
  • Prepare and maintain clinical records; supervise pre- and post-operative care of dental surgical cases.
  • Order examinations, analyses and x-rays, conduct rounds and review reports, record and the general progress of patients.
  • Teach and provide instruction to residents, interns and dental students.
  • Arrange and conduct consulting conferences and chart reviews for the discussion of the dental and surgical condition of patients.
  • Participate in clinical research.
  • Provide clinical supervision to licensed and professional staff.
  • Prepare reports and maintain records of activities.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

  • Completion of a dental internship program.
Licensure / Certification
  • License to practice dentistry issued by the California Board of Dental Examiners.
  • Possession of a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Knowledge
  • Principles and practices of modern dentistry and its application, techniques, procedures and equipment.
  • Current developments, trends and research in the dental field.
  • Basic understanding of clinical supervisory principles and practices.
  • Pharmacology, including laws regarding informed consent, dosage ranges, drug incompatibilities, and side effects.
  • Proper documentation of clinical services.
  • Dental diagnosis and treatment.
Skill / Ability
  • Diagnose and treat dental conditions of patients.
  • Develop and monitor appropriate treatment plans including prescription of medications.
  • Conduct dental examinations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, their families, staff and others.
  • Maintain dental records and prepare reports.
  • Clinically supervise licensed and professional staff.
