Columbia Heights Public Schools is seeking applications for Education Assistants!

Salary Range: $24.60–$25.63 per hour depending on the Education Assistant Category

Schedule:

Typically 6.5 hours/day (32.5 hours/week, benefit eligible)

Calendar: 183 days/year, follows school year (September – June), and includes mid‑year breaks

Major Responsibilities

Performs intermediate human support work assisting students with daily assignments and responsibilities of individual education plans; helping students with social and academic skills; assisting teachers in the classroom; interacting with children, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Principal and Teacher.

Qualifications

Two years of study at an institution of higher education;
Minnesota's standard: A minimum of 60 semester credits or the amount required to complete two years of full‑time enrollment as determined by the institution attended; OR An Associate's degree; or Minnesota's standard:
An AA, AS, AAS (or higher) degree; OR a demonstration, through a formal state academic assessment:

  • knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and math; or
  • knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading readiness, writing readiness and mathematics readiness as appropriate.
  • Passing score on the Para Pro test or Para educator test, both have been approved for statewide use.
Essential Functions
  • Assists students with academics; modifies their work to meet their needs for learning and adaptability.
  • Re‑words and re‑writes directions for assignments so students understand assignments.
  • Assists students with personal needs, organizational skills and responsibilities.
  • Escorts students to and from class, buses, lunch and special assignment areas.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in classroom teaching; ability to deal effectively with students, parents and teachers; skill in the use of classroom and instructional equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, parents, students and associates.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED with coursework in child development, human development, learning, behavioral management, or related field and minimal experience assisting students or learners to interpret and complete assigned responsibilities, acting as a job coach or mentor, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associates/Technical degree preferred.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly;

hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and exposure to bodily fluids;

work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements
  • Must have proof of successfully passing the para‑professional test or 60+ college credits.
  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural setting and with diverse groups of people preferred.
  • Alternatives to the qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable will also be considered.
