Position: PARA EDUCATOR SPECIAL EDUCATION - LEVEL II (Open Competitive)
Location: San Lorenzo

Basic Functions

Under the direction of an assigned administrator, perform a variety of instructional support duties involved in providing instructional assistance to individuals and small groups of special education students with moderate to severe disabilities. Assist in providing learning activities and meeting the special needs of assigned students in areas related to feeding, toileting, positioning, hygiene, motor skills, sensory and physical therapy functions;

monitor health conditions; perform a variety of clerical duties as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics of Para educator Levels
  • Para educator Special Ed – Level I:
    Serves students with mild to moderate disabilities and provides instructional support to individuals or small groups of students.
  • Para educator Special Ed – Level II
    :
    Serves students with moderate to severe disabilities, providing instructional and physical support, including assistance with toileting/diapering.
  • Para educator Special Ed – Level III
    :
    Provides 1:1 support more than 50% of the day, intensive behavioral and/or physical support, and more experience in data collection and academic modification.
  • Para educator Special Ed – Level IV
    :
    Highly specialized training to identify specific deficits, develop data collection and tracking systems, and manage individualized caseloads.
Essential Duties
  • Assist with the development, preparation, and reinforcement of learning materials.
  • Assist the assigned teacher with the implementation of IEPs and provide input into the development of goals and objectives.
  • Assist students with independent living skills: brushing teeth, grooming, eating; toileting; and changing diapers/soiled clothing.
  • Accompany students to regular education classrooms and community settings; adapt and modify lessons or materials to meet individual needs.
  • Monitor and assist students with activities to develop fine and gross motor skills.
  • Assist with the use of orthopedic devices, classroom computers, adaptive equipment, and electronic communication devices.
  • Assist students with goal work and class work; modify work using approved accommodations; redirect attention; provide support in circle/music time, sensory/occupational therapy, and snack/lunch.
  • Confer with teachers and specialists about programs and materials; notify teachers of any special problems or information concerning students.
  • Assist staff with the preparation of instructional and testing materials; administer tests; prepare graphic and written teaching materials.
  • Assist students with academic, social, and IEP goals; reinforce instruction; develop creative methods and techniques; review plans with teachers.
  • Assist in evaluating student progress; correct papers; report progress to teachers and staff.
  • Observe and manage behavior and safety of students according to approved procedures; maintain order; accompany students to and from the bus and off-campus events.
  • Record information, compile data, maintain records, files, and assemble packets and materials for students.
  • Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays, operating audiovisual equipment, distributing and collecting supplies, preparing bulletin board materials, and maintaining a neat learning environment.
  • Assist in assessing programs and materials; collect, assemble, and distribute learning materials; order instructional aids as necessary.
  • Operate standard office equipment: telephone, copier, computer.
  • Perform feeding and positioning techniques; provide routine first aid to injured students; monitor for seizures and other health conditions.
Other Duties

Perform related duties as assigned; may provide specialized medical services in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
