Announcement:
Los Angeles Harbor College (LAHC) is seeking applications for a Tenure Track Adult Education Counselor position, set to begin in the Fall 2026 academic year. This is a 12-month, D-basis, 1.0 FTE in-person position: .80 Adult Education Counseling/.20 General Counseling.
Under the general direction and supervision of the Vice President of Student Services, Counseling Chair, and Dean, the Adult Education Counselor will offer guidance and support to adult learners as they pursue their educational and career objectives. Responsibilities include assisting individuals in defining their educational and career goals, providing resources and support to help achieve these goals, and addressing any obstacles to success.
The role demands a deep commitment to adult education principles, empathy, and strong counseling skills. The successful candidate is required to work on campus on a full-time basis.
About the College and Department:
LAHC located in Wilmington, California, is one of the nine colleges within the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD). Serving approximately 10,000 students, LAHC provides a broad spectrum of academic and career programs and facilitates transfers to leading private and public colleges and universities.
The Counseling Department at LAHC is comprised of skilled and professionally trained faculty who assist students with educational planning, career development, transfer processes, and other academic and personal matters crucial to student success. The department features general counselors as well as those dedicated to providing specialized services for targeted student groups . All counseling faculty are expected to engage in regular department meetings, professional development, college-wide activities, and shared governance committees.
Minimum Qualifications:
* Master's Degree or higher in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, educational counseling, guidance counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling; OR
* the equivalent.
* Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds of community college students and familiarity with issues related to student equity.
NOTE:
A bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the general direction of the Vice President of Student Services, Dean, and the LAHC Counseling Chair, the Adult Education Counselor is expected to actively engage in Counseling Department activities and campus-wide initiatives. This role involves delivering comprehensive counseling services-encompassing academic, career, transfer, and vocational guidance-to students from diverse and multicultural backgrounds across all areas of Adult Education. In addition duties include, but are not limited to the following:
* Provide comprehensive academic and career counseling to students both face-to-face and online, primarily on-site at Harbor College.
* Participate in campus wide events;
Registration, Early Decision, and Drop-In peak periods in General Counseling.
* Support General Counseling area with drop-in and appointments .2 load during the academic year.
* Assist students from diverse and socio-economic backgrounds in choosing and planning immediate and long-range educational goals, including developing abbreviated and comprehensive student education plans.
* Interpret the college catalog, class schedules, and articulation agreements to assist students in navigating their educational paths.
* Help students set and plan immediate and long-term educational goals, including creating abbreviated and comprehensive student educational plans to ensure they stay on track for completion.
* Conduct orientations for new students to introduce them to college programs, services, and student success workshops.
* Facilitate career decision-making by guiding students through self-assessment and career exploration processes, in collaboration with the Career Counselor.
* Support students on probation or facing dismissal by offering individual and group counseling and work with the Academic Probation Counselor to develop success plans.
* Review and evaluate student transcripts in coordination with the Articulation Officer.
* Contribute to the development of programs and services that support initiatives such as Career Pathways, LA College Promise, Student Equity, and Basic Skills, aimed at enhancing student success and completion.
