It provides public library services to the residents of the unincorporated areas of the County and the cities of Corte Madera, Fairfax, and Novato.
AboutThe Position
The Community Library Specialist (CLS) reports to a Branch Manager. These part‑time positions provide library services for patrons of all ages in small, rural communities and support daily branch operations at the Stinson Beach Library or the Inverness Library. Community engagement, learning, and empowerment are central to the role. Two vacancies are available: one at Stinson Beach and one at Inverness.
PrimaryDuties of the Community Library Specialist
- Staff a circulation/service desk to provide reference and reader’s advisory services, as well as computer and technology support.
- Develop and implement responsive, inclusive programming that reflects community needs and interests.
- Attend community events to provide information about library services and conduct presentations to community groups.
- Build strong relationships with local organizations and community members.
- Participate in branch, regional, and systemwide library meetings and committee activities.
In addition to the primary duties, Stinson Beach responsibilities include:
- Cooperate with a coworker in maintaining the library’s collections.
- Coordinate a rotating art gallery wall in the library.
- Supervise volunteers.
Stinson Beach works 66 hours biweekly on the following schedule:
- Monday 9:30 am–6 pm
- Tuesday 11:30 am–8 pm
- Wednesday 10:00 am–2 pm
- Friday 9:30 am–6:00 pm
- Saturday 9:30 am–5:00 pm
In addition to the primary duties, Inverness responsibilities include:
- Maintain the library’s collections.
- Work closely with the local TK‑grade 2 school to provide education equity support and library services.
- Supervise volunteers.
Inverness works 56.25 hours biweekly on the following schedule:
- Monday 2:00 pm–7:00 pm
- Tuesday 9:30 am–3:00 pm
- Wednesday 9:30 am–3:00 pm
- Friday 10:00 am–6:00 pm
- Saturday 9:30 am–2:00 pm
- Strong emotional intelligence and the ability to work with people from all backgrounds.
- Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Confidence using computers and technology of all types and exceptional organizational skills.
- Experience assessing and responding to community needs.
- Bilingual skills in English/Spanish are desirable but not required.
Selected candidates must be fingerprinted by the Sheriff’s Department and must pass a DOJ Live Scan background check prior to appointment. Bilingual differential applicants must demonstrate proficiency in both Spanish and English before appointment via a bilingual proficiency exam.
Knowledge and Ability Requirements- Knowledge of library policies, procedures, methods, practices, terminology, and automated library equipment.
- Knowledge of general library reference materials and resources.
- Knowledge of computer applications and software programs related to the work.
- Knowledge of customer relations and business letter writing techniques.
- Ability to independently operate a small branch library and perform patron services.
- Ability to answer reference questions, interpret library policies, and advise patrons on technology.
- Ability to supervise staff and train volunteers.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships, communicate effectively, and make sound independent decisions.
Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge and abilities. Typically, three years of full‑time paraprofessional library experience or three years of experience providing programmatic services in a community agency setting. Related coursework may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis (30 semester or 45 quarter units) for a maximum of two years.
