English Conversation Group Facilitator

These volunteers run informal conversation groups for adults at Sacramento Public Library. The facilitator creates a structured yet relaxed environment based on a theme or topic for each session, encouraging participants to speak and connect. Minimal lecturing is required; the focus is on maximizing participants’ speaking opportunities.

Key responsibilities include:

• Prepare and lead sessions on Tuesdays from 4:30–5:30, with a minimum preparation time of 30 minutes (up to 1 hour).
• Build rapport with participants and adapt activities to meet their interests and English proficiency levels.
• Model interactive activities such as role play to promote active participation.
• Foster a culturally competent and welcoming atmosphere for diverse backgrounds.

• Humble, curious, patient, creative, flexible, culturally competent, self‑aware.
• Comfortable with beginner‑level English speakers.
• Values participants’ interests over own agenda.
• Fluent in English and easily understood by others.
• Excellent facilitation skills or willingness to learn; encourages peer interaction.
• Willingness to incorporate interactive activities.
• Models instruction through activities rather than explanation.

The position is for the North Highlands‑Antelope library. There may also be openings at other Sacramento library locations or virtual co‑facilitator opportunities.
