$41,000 – $86,751 per year (at 50% FTE) depending on level of education and experience

Position Purpose

The Science Teacher prepares curriculum and teaches biology / environmental science to high‑school students in grades 9‑12.

Essential Functions
  • Teach biology / environmental science successfully to high‑school students.
  • Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and student resources.
  • Maintain accurate student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
  • Assess student work and provide meaningful feedback to guide learning and growth.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours to advise and assist students.
  • Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, materials, and methods of instruction.
  • Use effective class‑management techniques to ensure effective learning.
  • Contribute actively to building a vibrant faculty/staff learning culture and collaborate with colleagues on curriculum and other school programs.
  • Maintain expertise in subject matter and pedagogy through professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Faculty Expectations
  • Chaperone and fulfill community responsibilities.
  • Participate in professional development and training sessions.
  • Substitute for teachers, hold office hours, proctor exams, conduct admission interviews, and attend mandatory meetings or events (e.g., Director’s Day, open houses, school annual auction).
Qualifications
  • BA in biology or a relevant field and related teaching experience.
  • Prior experience in an independent/Catholic school environment is strongly preferred.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field or teaching credential in biology / environmental science is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach high‑school–level courses in at least one other discipline within the subject area.
  • Strong understanding of and commitment to pedagogy aligned with the National Science Teaching Association and Next‑Generation Science Standards.
  • Ability to teach adolescents with enthusiasm, joy, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to integrate innovative technology to support student learning.
  • Ability to support all learners, including those with identified learning differences or disabilities.
  • Passion for the subject area and for fostering that passion in adolescents.
  • Willingness to adapt to an existing curriculum and contribute ideas to enhance the academic program.
  • Knowledge of and experience with current best practices in curriculum and instruction, especially standards‑based learning.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Additional skills in Spanish are valued and preferred.
  • Clear commitment to the educational philosophy of Sacred Heart Schools and related professional behavior.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
  • Work in a highly stressful environment with a variety of challenges and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and punctuality.
  • Work at a desk and computer for extended periods.
  • Work primarily in a climate‑controlled classroom and occasionally in outdoor weather conditions (heat and cold typical to the Bay Area).
  • Occasionally lift up to 30 lbs and regularly travel safely across a 63‑acre campus.
  • Available and willing to attend on some evenings, weekends, and occasional overnight trips.
  • Abide by school safety policies (e.g., wearing masks, hand washing).
