Program Instructor

There are immediate vacancies for Program Instructors in Recreation and Senior Services. Salary:
Based on skills, experience level and class registrations. Under limited supervision performs instruction related to a variety of community programs and activities offered in the Community Services Division including but not limited to recreation and senior programs. Responsible for planning, executing, and instruction of specialized classes and programs for varying ages, in all levels from basic to advanced; and to perform related work as required.

Positions in this class require a moderate amount of previous instruction experience in the specialized class or program provided. Positions in this class perform work which is varied, creative, and independent. Work is reviewed periodically, and feedback from program participants is used in the evaluation. Incumbents are expected to utilize their discretion for typical variations in work and consult their immediate supervisor for further direction in difficult situations.

Examples of duties include preparing program and class lessons; instructing and leading groups of participants in a specific subject or lesson; establishing and enforcing class/program rules and policies for participants; utilizing skills and knowledge to effectively convey class content to participants; preparing site for activity and ensuring proper clean-up at the end of each class/program; setting up and breaking down the room, field, or facility where instruction is held;

collecting fees; ensuring proper recordkeeping of participants including attendance and payment per session; ordering supplies and materials; engaging with participants before and after class; following all safety procedures; light custodial; handling minor disagreements between participants; using specialized art, music, exercise, or other equipment related to the topic of instruction; accompanying participants on field trips; effectively responding to emergencies related to participants or the facility;

assisting with special events; and other duties as assigned.

License and certification required:
Certification:
Possession of a valid First Aid Certificate, or the ability to obtain the certificate within two (2) months of hire.

Education and experience:

Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance. One (1) year of experience in preparing program or class lessons and instructing groups of participants. Desirable qualification:
Experience working with senior citizens or youth.

Working conditions:

Individuals may be required to work independently on day and evening shifts; and may be required to work at several Community Services locations.

Physical demands and working conditions:
Strength:
Light work-occasional lifting, carrying and/or pushing up to 25 pounds maximum; with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Physical activities include: ability to lead and participate in activities; sitting and/or standing for long periods of time, bending, stooping, reaching, walking, up to and including the possibility of climbing a ladder to reach inventory supplies; assist elderly and disabled clients as necessary;

and the ability to work flexible scheduled shifts including weekends.
