Roles & Responsibilities
  • Teach an introductory course in American Sign Language (ASL) to students, emphasizing basic conversation skills, finger spelling, numbers, vocabulary, classifiers, grammar structure, facial expressions, body movement, and cultural aspects of the Deaf community.
  • Develop and deliver curriculum using multiple teaching methodologies, including in‑class, distance learning, and programs for incarcerated students.
  • Compose ASL gloss translations from English, and assess student learning outcomes.
  • Participate in recruitment and articulation activities with local schools, colleges, and universities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years of related professional experience, OR
  • Associate degree and at least 6 years of related professional experience.
  • The equivalent combination of education, experience, and accomplishments may be considered; applicants should submit an Application for Equivalence with supporting documents.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of diverse student backgrounds.
Knowledge & Abilities
  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues and students, fostering an inclusive learning environment.
  • Expertise in developing curriculum delivered via various modalities.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Commitment to maintaining subject‑matter currency and exploring new technologies.
  • Knowledge of the California community college mission and willingness to engage in outreach.
