Essential DutiesUnder the supervision of an administrator, performs a variety of instructional activities; assists in conducting intensified learning or physical education experiences for Individuals with Exceptional Needs (IWENs); performs a variety of clerical and supportive tasks for instructional personnel.
Minimum QualificationsEducation:
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires all paraprofessionals who provide instructional assistance in a classroom to possess a high-school diploma or General Education Development (GED) or equivalent AND ONE of the following:
- A minimum of 48 semester or 72 quarter units of college coursework.
- An Associate or higher degree from an accredited college or university.
- Pass an assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching, reading, writing and mathematics.
Experience:
One year of paid or volunteer experience within an educational or child care setting, preferably serving special education students. Physical Requirement:
Successfully complete a physical examination. Absence of back problems or any other physical impairments that might preclude the performance of physical labor or lifting.
Knowledge of:
- English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar.
- Basic arithmetical concepts.
- Student behavior management techniques and strategies.
- Learning problems of children with special educational needs.
- Concepts of child development and child behavior characteristics.
- Simple record keeping and record management.
- Public education goals and objectives.
- Basic housekeeping methods.
Ability to:
- Learn and utilize simple methods and procedures to be followed in an instructional setting.
- Perform simple clerical tasks and operate standard office machines and computers.
- Effectively utilize training received on the job.
- Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. unassisted and over 50 lbs. with assistance.
- Tolerate strong odors.
- Work well with children.
The screening and examination process for this position, which may be subject to modification, is designed to ensure a fair and job-related evaluation of all candidates. The process may include application screening, initial review of qualifications, verification of documentation or certifications, and, in some cases, supplemental application screening. The stated qualifications represent only the minimum requirements and do not guarantee eligibility for examination or placement on an eligibility list.
The examination may consist of any combination of the following: training and experience evaluation, written knowledge test, hands on/performance test, structured panel interview, situational judgement interview, or other assessments of fitness for the position. All parts of the examination process are job related. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each portion of the examination to advance to next stages and ultimately be placed on the eligibility list.
Depending on the classification, eligibility lists may remain in effect for six months or one year.
