Overview

The Allegany County Public Schools (ACPS) ESOL Certified Teacher provides direct instructional services to multilingual learners as well as instructional leadership to general education teachers and other school staff. The ESOL Certified Teacher serves as an instructional leader, supports the development of professional learning communities across the school system, collaborates with supervisors and colleagues to improve instructional practices for multilingual learners, and promotes the effective implementation of evidence-based instructional strategies.

The ESOL Certified Teacher also serves as a liaison between schools, the district, families, and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) to ensure that all federal and state requirements related to English Learners (ELs) are understood and implemented with fidelity. Additionally, the ESOL Certified Teacher advocates for multilingual learners and their families by fostering meaningful partnerships with parents, caregivers, and the school community.

Qualifications
  • Holds or is eligible for Maryland certification in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, consultation, and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of effective instructional practices, language acquisition, and assessment for multilingual learners.
  • Commits to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, families, colleagues, and community partners.
Essential Job Functions
  • Provide direct instructional services to multilingual learners in accordance with federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other staff to implement evidence-based instructional practices that support multilingual learners during instruction, assessment, communication opportunities, and educational planning.
  • Serve as a liaison among school staff, district administrators, and the Department of Student Services regarding curriculum, instruction, assessment, professional learning, and program implementation.
  • Collaborate with the School and District Testing Coordinator to ensure compliance with required state assessments for multilingual learners.
  • Attend district and school meetings, collaborate with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Division of Multilingual Learners, and communicate program updates and requirements to appropriate staff.
  • Coordinate and assist with the administration of WIDA English language proficiency assessments.
  • Participate in student, parent, and teacher conferences, as appropriate.
  • Plan and deliver professional learning opportunities for teachers and staff regarding effective instructional practices for multilingual learners.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation required for state and federal compliance.
  • Support classroom teachers by:
  • Identifying, selecting, and utilizing instructional resources that promote academic success for multilingual learners.
  • Implementing research-based instructional strategies and language supports.
  • Analyzing student performance data to identify instructional needs and recommend appropriate accommodations and instructional adjustments.
  • Increasing student engagement and access to grade-level curriculum.
  • Building collaborative relationships that strengthen ESOL programming and services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the success of multilingual learners and the goals of Allegany County Public Schools.
