Full time Position: 1.0 FTE

Position Summary

The successful candidate will manage a student caseload of preschool- to high school‑aged deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students district wide. The position requires knowledge of relevant curriculum and the ability to teach specific content areas, and to modify instruction for deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students. The candidate must possess knowledge of ASL and English language development, skill in constructing communication systems, and proficiency in educational interpreting to guide and collaborate with interpreters.

The role demands appreciation for parental concerns, availability to parents, and the ability to contribute to dynamic, innovative teams focused on enhancing educational programs. The position must also be proficient in assessment practices.

Teaching/Certified Position

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in education or special education (minimum 30 college credits in special education)
  • Valid Alaska teaching certificate with a Special Education – Hearing Impaired endorsement, or ability to obtain upon hire
  • Recent experience managing large caseloads with diverse students
  • Flexibility to work with colleagues and community members in multiple settings
  • Knowledge of current best practices in special education
  • Knowledge of diverse teaching strategies for students with varied needs
  • Appreciation for parental concerns and availability to parents
  • Skill facilitating challenging/mediate IEP meetings to design appropriate educational programs
  • Demonstrated skill delivering SPED professional development through research‑based strategies
  • Knowledge of Alaska state SPED legal and procedural compliance
  • Excellent interpersonal skills promoting positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues
Preferred Requirements
  • Master's Degree in special education preferred
  • Recent experience teaching special education and general education
  • Understanding of IDEA requirements
Compensation

Salary depends on experience and education. The Juneau School District offers a competitive salary and an excellent benefit package, including medical, dental, vision, and the Teachers Retirement System (TRS) plan.
