Position Summary / ResponsibilitiesAn Autism Specialist plans, develops, and coordinates service delivery options to meet the needs of students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD); consults with and trains instructional staff regarding pro‑active programming, behavioral plans and behavioral supports; assists instructional personnel in development of comprehensive program plans; collaborates with related service providers, general education teachers, families, and others as appropriate.
Provide classroom‑based consultation to teachers and support staff in designing appropriate classroom environments and instructional plans for students with ASD.
Support teams in the development, review, and implementation of Individualized Educational Plans, Functional Behavior Assessments, Behavior Intervention Plans, and curriculum for students with ASD.
Develop and implement professional development for district staff in autism and general information regarding behavior analysis.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, parents, school district personnel, community‑based agencies and other professionals working in the area.
Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion; work within a changing and demanding environment.
Function effectively in stressful situations and exercise good judgment under potentially dangerous conditions.
Direct work with students who present complex and challenging behaviors on a case‑by‑case basis.
Maintain a written log of consultation hours and other relevant activities.
Stay up to date with current research.
Communicate ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
Minimum Requirements- NYS Certification in Special Education/Related field with focus in Applied Behavioral Analysis
- NYS License in Clinical Psychology with focus in Applied Behavioral Analysis
- Master's in Psychology/Related field with focus as an Applied Behavioral Analyst
- BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) and/or LBA (Licensed Behavior Analyst) Certification
- Must be willing to obtain BCBA within 5 years
- Minimum of five (5) years of Special Education experience, including students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
- Experience working in self‑contained autism classrooms.
- Experience working with students with autism in general education or integrated classroom settings.
- Experience in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools and working directly with students who demonstrate challenging/aggressive behaviors.
- Knowledge of progressive teaching approaches:
Applied Behavioral Analysis, TEACCH, PECS, social stories, and social thinking curriculum. - Experience/skills working and collaborating with multiple professionals/disciplines.
