Area Director – Merit Badges, Field Trips, and Custom Reservations
The Area Director – Merit Badges, Field Trips, and Custom Reservations will oversee curriculum development, program delivery/operations, and assign staffing for merit badge classes, field trip outings with local elementary schools, custom group activity reservations, and facility room rentals in teamwork with the Sr. Program Director and our Sales Team. Serves with a major responsibility for customer service, outreach/promotion, curriculum development, Staff/Instructor training and development, Staff scheduling, class and Staff supervision, and class/activity scheduling.
Ensures that Newport Sea Base programs meet the highest health and safety standards.
Enforce National Scouting America policies, all state and local boating safety laws, and environmental regulations, as applicable. Reports directly to the NSB Sr. Program Director. Must be at least 21 years old, have CPR and First Aid Certification. Must know how to swim, and prepare for Red Cross Lifeguard Certification if not attained already.
Primary Responsibilities/Duties:
- Weekly Shift: Tues-Sat (5 days per week, 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week);
Work week would be Tues-Sat during the school year (Sept-May) and Mon-Sat during our 10-week summer camp from June-August. - Lead Supervisor for Saturday/Sunday activities and room rentals.
- Oversees Merit Badge Program (which includes classes like Cooking, First Aid, Oceanography), non-sailing aquatics classes like kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding, and Custom Group Outing Reservations (to include room rental reservations) while under the supervision of the Sr. Program Director.
- Leads the Journey to the Ocean (JTO) field trip program (Half day AM events during the weekdays, marine science based stations working with local elementary school classes). Leads JTO curriculum development and staffing for each field trip day, manages each reservation and conducts outreach (mainly via email and phone calls).
- Works with the Sales Department and helps coordinate and plan field trips with schools in Orange County. Maintaining a list of at least 15-20 schools that have previously attended, create rapport with their Principals and Teachers, and establish a retention plan for schools to return year after year. Outreach to new schools as well.
- Organizes custom group activity reservations in conjunction with the Sales Department. Handles all program aspects of the staffing and preparation of these private reservations. Responsible for budget tracking for custom reservations. Also leads the organization of our NSB Holiday Boat Parade Lights Cruise events.
- Oversees all room rentals including outreach and supervision day of the events; hours for room rentals may include Saturdays and rare Sundays per room rental requests. Help outreach to and reserve non-profit organizations around Orange County.
- Works with the Sales Department and helps communicate with parents regarding classes needs and questions.
- Helps build enrollment with classes. Contacts previous customers and finds new leads for increased enrollment and participation.
- Will assist in overseeing the curriculum, operations, and Staff training for over 20 plus classes and programs such as Environmental Science, Oceanography, Citizenship in the Nation, Personal Management, First Aid, E-Prep, Engineering, and more.
- Monitors, revises, and creates curriculum/lesson plans that are exciting and mission-focused in order to expand usage of the facility, increase number of youth participating in program, and increase revenue. Develop curriculum that is fun, varied, and involve youth of various ages. Communicates thoroughly any proposed program changes. Must keep up with annual changes to Scouting America standards and Merit Badge requirements;
update program binders and electronic lesson plans on our server/One Drive. - Year round, creates the master list of scheduled staff for classes in conjunction with the Sailing Director and posts Weekend Glance schedules for all working Staff and Directors to view on a weekly basis.
