Position Overview
Salary: $38.43 - $47.99/hour; $79,934.40 - $99,819.20/year + $1,000/mo Tahoe Assignment Premium.
Placer County Department of Public Works – Tahoe Engineering Division and Community Development Resource Agency – Engineering & Surveying Division are seeking Junior Engineer and Assistant Engineer candidates.
To qualify for this recruitment, the educational requirement must be met by date of appointment. Final‑semester students or those with relevant equivalent experience may apply.
Responsibilities- Perform professional and technical engineering work in design, construction, land development, transportation and traffic planning, surveying, solid waste and landfill operations, assessment district engineering, storm control, and flood control engineering.
- Design and prepare plans and specifications for public works projects including roads, storm drains, utility lines, and landfill facilities; develop revised design and construction standards; conduct research, calculations, and cost estimates.
- Administer design and construction contracts; coordinate and review work of outside consultants; review and recommend payments and billing; negotiate prices and schedules; serve as resident engineer on construction projects.
- Participate in plan check, review, processing, and permitting of plans for private developments affecting county roads and drainage; ensure compliance with codes, ordinances, rules and regulations.
- Participate in environmental review of proposed land development projects; represent the department at public hearings and meetings; set conditions of approval.
- Review potential land‑development impacts on county transportation; identify short‑ and long‑term roadway needs, perform traffic forecasting, and evaluate funding mechanisms.
- Perform traffic engineering services including road signage, accident investigation, maintenance of road and accident record systems, and traffic studies.
- Collect survey and mapping data as required.
- Oversee county landfill and solid waste disposal facilities; review operator contracts, administer consultant contracts, authorize progress payments, submit regulatory reports, and make operational recommendations.
- Coordinate activities related to formation and administration of benefit assessment districts and dependent special districts; develop and monitor project financing; administer related consultant contracts and vendor services; prepare and administer annual district budgets.
- Conduct hydrologic and hydraulic engineering studies, including flood routing, storage, retention, storm runoff, and erosion control analyses.
- Coordinate public works activities with other county departments, divisions, sections, and outside agencies.
- Interface with and respond to the public in meetings, offices, or by telephone/correspondence; prepare technical reports, studies, and visual presentations.
- Train and lead subordinate staff as assigned.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, county employees, and the public.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- No professional experience required.
- Education:
Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university with major coursework in civil engineering or a related field; or possession of a California Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) Certificate. - Valid driver’s license may be required; proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.
