POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Director of Public Works, the incumbent will perform the duties related to the operation and maintenance of the Tribe’s wastewater treatment systems.

The incumbent is expected to work in accordance with the mission, purpose, and values of the Colusa Indian Community Council.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operate and maintain wastewater treatment, collection and disposal facilities;
  • Develop a general understanding of the plating process and the resulting waste that is generated.
  • Understand the sources of waste and the chemicals and other ingredients that comprise the wastewater treatment operation and the contribution each chemical makes toward the systems operation;
  • Maintain continual analysis and control of the wastewater influent and effluent, using corrective chemical actions when necessary to assure the ongoing regulatory compliance of the wastewater treatment operation. This includes the physical addition of the required chemicals to maintain this compliance;
  • Recognize all the hazards associated with the duties and responsibilities of a wastewater treatment operator and perform work in a proper and safe manner;
  • Perform appropriate storage activities for other chemicals, waste materials, and sludge that result from plant plating activities;
  • Perform additional duties as directed by the Director or supervisor;
  • Maintain all required records and files on waste treatment system operations and functions.
  • Inform supervisors: any unsafe practices, health hazard working conditions, contaminated or abnormal process solution appearance and equipment mal-function.
  • Monitor, inspect and document plant operations systems;
  • Troubleshoot motors, pumps and other electrical equipment;
  • Collect, analyze and interpret wastewater and water samples;
  • May perform other duties commensurate with the functions and level of the position.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    • Education:

      High school diploma or equivalent
    • Experience:

      Equivalent of one (1) year of operational experience in water treatment facility
    • Licensing: CA State Water Resources Control Board - Wastewater Operator Certification (Grade I)

    Valid California Driver’s License

    SUPERVISORIAL DUTIES:
    None

    KEY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
    • Able to read and interpret hazard labels, OSHA warnings and product use instructions.
    • Knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, and operating procedures pertinent to the operation of an activated sludge wastewater treatment facility.
    • Knowledge of the health and safety hazards connected with sewage treatment facility operation and the necessary safety and health precautions.
    • Knowledge of laboratory testing and waste water sampling techniques.
    • Skill in the use and care of a variety of hand tools and equipment.
    • Ability to operate a variety of facility pumping, treatment, and control equipment.
    • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely.
    • Ability to analyze and act on a variety of data and instrument readings.
    • Ability to climb ladders, sufficient mobility to perform duties in small spaces by crouching, stooping, or kneeling, and physical ability to perform tasks requiring physical strength and finger dexterity.
    • Ability to accurately log instrument readings and operating information.
    • Ability to perform a variety of facility maintenance and housekeeping work.
    • Ability to work cooperatively with others as a member of a technical operating team.
    • Maintains high confidentiality standards at all times. Is required to sign a confidentiality statement upon acceptance of employment.

    • Good problem-solving skills.
    • Strong organization and time management skills.
    • Dedicated hard worker with ability to report to work on a daily basis.
