POLICE OFFICER LATERAL
MONTHLY SALARY: $9,607 – $11,678. PLUS AN EXCELLENT BENEFITS PACKAGE.
RECRUITMENT OVERVIEWThis recruitment establishes an eligibility list for the Vernon Police Department to be used for future vacancies. The position is open to recent graduates of the California Police Academy or current California police officers.
SUMMARYUnder basic supervision, the officer provides swift, professional and courteous police services for the Vernon Police Department (VPD). Responsibilities include responding to calls for service, enforcing laws and ordinances, and maintaining peace and safety in the community. Core duties encompass patrol, investigations, traffic regulation, and intervention.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSPolice Officer is a sworn public safety designation that performs a variety of skillful, professional, specialized and complex duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES- Enforce state and federal laws, city regulations, and VPD policies to preserve peace and solve problems.
- Provide community‑oriented police services and collaborate with citizens to address safety, crime, and neighborhood issues.
- Preserve the peace through mediation, investigation, intervention, assistance and arrest as necessary.
- Patrol the city, identify suspicious activity, and initiate stops and examinations of vehicles and persons.
- Respond to emergency and non‑emergency calls, investigate, document, resolve complaints, traffic incidents, crimes and dangerous activities.
- Enforce traffic regulations and safety; apprehend violators and ensure public safety.
- Investigate crimes and accidents, secure and process crime scenes and evidence, arrest violators, transport suspects, and coordinate with court proceedings.
- Complete detailed reports and required paperwork; testify in court as directed.
- Maintain VPD vehicles and equipment per Department standards.
- Assist and coordinate with other emergency services, outside organizations, businesses, and law‑enforcement agencies.
- Perform specialized tasks in training, D.A.R.E., canine, and investigative teams.
- Maintain integrity, professionalism and public trust by following rules and regulations.
- Support community relations through courteous and cooperative behavior; uphold confidentiality of work‑related information.
High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Completion of training and Peace Officer certification with the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and Basic POST certificate.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTSA valid California State Driver’s License is required. Must maintain Peace Officer certification with POST and Basic POST certification. Upon hire, must complete at least 19 weeks of Field Training. Additional technical training and certifications may be required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENTWork will take place in the city office and in the field. Duties may expose the officer to physical attacks, hazardous chemicals, infectious diseases, and the need to restrain persons. Physical fitness to meet VPD standards is required.
