Job Summary

The County of Mono is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Deputy Sheriff I/II (Lateral). Under general supervision, this sworn law enforcement role performs a wide range of duties including patrol, crime prevention and investigation, civil process service, court security, and inmate supervision. Deputies rotate through assignments such as Patrol, Bailiff, Civil Deputy, Crime Scene Investigator, Identification Technician, and Deputy Coroner, gaining experience across the full scope of Sheriff’s Office operations.

This position requires independent decision‑making in the field, strong observational and communication skills, and the ability to respond effectively in dynamic and sometimes high‑risk situations.

Responsibilities
  • Perform patrol, crime prevention, and investigative duties.
  • Serve civil process and maintain court security.
  • Supervise inmates and manage detention activities.
  • Rotate through assignments including Patrol, Bailiff, Civil Deputy, Crime Scene Investigator, Identification Technician, and Deputy Coroner.
  • Make independent decisions in the field and communicate effectively with colleagues and the public.
  • Operate and maintain department equipment and vehicles.
  • Prepare reports and documentation for investigations and court proceedings.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of high school (or equivalent) supplemented by specialized training approved by the Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST).
  • Possession of a Basic Certificate issued by POST or a POST‑certified academy.
  • Valid California driver’s license.
