Correctional Deputy Sheriff/Dispatcher I

Under supervision, to work in a training capacity, learning to supervise inmates at the County Detention Facility and maintain Facility security; to learn procedures and methods for the care, custody, and confinement of inmates; to oversee work details and leisure activities; to learn to receive and dispatch non-emergency and emergency radio and telephone communications to law enforcement, emergency medical, and other public safety personnel as Public Safety Answering Point for the 911 System;

to maintain field communications during incidents; to perform general office support assignments; and to do related work as required.

Correctional Deputy Sheriff/Dispatcher II

Under general supervision, to supervise inmates at the County Detention Facility according to laws, regulations, and policies of the State of California and Trinity County; to enforce Facility rules and maintain Facility security; to be responsible for the care, custody, and confinement of inmates during an assigned shift; to oversee work details and leisure activities; to receive and dispatch non-emergency and emergency radio and telephone communications to law enforcement, emergency medical, and other public safety personnel as Public Safety Answering Point for the 911 System;

to maintain field communications during incidents; to perform general office support assignments; and to do related work as required.

Correctional and Dispatching Duties

Correctional Deputy Sheriff/Dispatcher I

Correctional duties:
Assists with supervision of inmates in the County Detention Facility; may oversee inmates during leisure time activities and on work details; checks work areas to ensure inmates are working on assigned projects; maintains sanitation of facilities, cells, and grounds; conducts periodic block checks; learns procedures and performs searches of inmates and cells for contraband; maintains discipline among inmates; opens and censors incoming mail;

maintains and updates Detention Facility records; responds to inquiries regarding inmate detention and Detention Facility policies within Department regulations; learns to receive and book inmates; learns fingerprinting and takes photographs; assigns prisoners to cells according to the Facility classification plan; learns requirements and releases prisoners with proper authorization, returning personal property and clothing; may testify in court and before disciplinary boards;

delivers pre-packaged medications; investigates incidents and violations of rules; collects and secures evidence; may transport inmates to and from court, medical appointments, and other institutions; supervises inmates and visitors during visiting hours; serves warrants; operates a centralized control system controlling access and movement in the Facility.

Dispatching duties:
Answers the telephone, classifies calls, determines priority of response, and dispatches appropriate Emergency Medical and other Public Safety units according to availability, geographic area, and location; maintains field communications during checks, emergencies and incidents; transfers emergency calls to other agencies as warranted; monitors public safety radio channels and coordinates dispatch of personnel and equipment; maintains records/logs of calls, radio transmissions, and messages;

enters information into CLETS and operates CAD; sends, receives, and decodes teletype information; enters and tracks restraining orders into local, state, and national databases; coordinates interagency communications; processes warrants; updates daily dispatch logs; performs general office support and provides information to staff and the public.

Correctional Deputy Sheriff/Dispatcher II

Correctional duties:
Supervises inmates, oversees leisure time activities and work details; ensures facilities, cells, and grounds are sanitary; conducts block checks; performs inmate searches; maintains discipline; handles mail; maintains records; responds to inquiries; coordinates inmate processing, fingerprinting, photographs; assigns prisoners to cells; releases prisoners with proper authorization; testifies in court and before disciplinary boards; delivers medications; investigates incidents and violations; collects and secures evidence;

transports inmates as needed; supervises inmates and visitors during visiting hours; serves warrants; operates a centralized control system; and may transport inmates.

Dispatching duties:
Answers calls, prioritizes responses, and dispatches Emergency Medical and Public Safety units; maintains field communications during emergencies; coordinates interagency communications; maintains logs and records; uses CLETS and CAD systems; processes warrants and updates dispatch logs; performs general office support; provides information to staff and the public; may…
