Probation Corrections Supervisors I
The Probation Department is recruiting Probation Corrections Supervisors I who supervise correctional staff in the daily operations and activities of a juvenile detention/treatment facility; assign, review and evaluate the work of Probation Corrections Officers for an assigned unit; direct and supervise a variety of counseling and activity programs; and make regular rounds of a Juvenile Hall or treatment facility ensuring the safety and security of institution and wards.
These positions are expected to participate in a force options training program, which includes repressing combative behavior, tactical negotiations, unarmed defensive tactics, and use of pepper spray. The County’s juvenile detention and treatment facilities operate 7 days/week, 24 hours/day. These positions will require evening, night, weekend and holiday work. Incumbents may be assigned to any Juvenile Hall or treatment facility depending on staffing needs:
San Bernardino, Rancho Cucamonga or Apple Valley.
Option 1: Education:
Completion of a bachelor’s degree OR thirty semester (45 quarter) units of completed college coursework in psychology, sociology, criminology, criminal justice or other closely related behavioral science courses; at least half must be upper division courses.
Experience:
Eighteen months of corrections officer/group counseling work experience in a 24-hour juvenile correctional institution.
Option 2: Education:
Completion of an associate’s degree OR sixty semester (90 quarter) units of completed college coursework, which includes fifteen semester (23 quarter) units in the areas described above.

Thirty months of corrections officer/group counseling work experience in a 24-hour juvenile correctional institution.

Peace Officer RequirementsPass a background investigation, which includes a fingerprint check, psychological testing and a polygraph test (current San Bernardino County Probation Dept. employees in peace officer positions will not be required to take the polygraph test). Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony or be on active probation.
Possess a U.S. High School diploma or equivalent (possession of an associate or bachelor’s degree may substitute).
Selection ProcessSkills:
Examination will include a writing exercise (weighted 60%) administered on January 15, 2009, which will consist of an evaluation of knowledge and skills.

Oral Exam: Candidates successful in the writing exercise will be invited to an oral exam (weighted 40%) which may include the following topics:

- Interpersonal Skills
The final grade will be a combination of successful scores in the writing exercise and oral exam.
