Firefighter Position
Duties
- Perform management and administrative duties needed to accomplish goals and objectives of Fire and Emergency Services.
- Implement and evaluate policies and procedures; direct and control maintenance records, reports and statistical data.
- Prepare pre-fire plans, emergency response plans and disaster preparedness plans and establish procedures to ensure they can be performed during all types of incidents.
- Direct emergency response services; ensure resources are deployed to prevent/minimize property damage; ensure essential services are not disrupted and ensure preservation of natural resources.
- Establish performance standards, reviews performance and prepares performance ratings.
- Develop and execute annual budget; present report of organizational functions, requirements and objectives; present briefing of emergency responses and actions.
- Plan and implement a fire protection, fire prevention HAZMAT/CBRN-E and a fire suppression/emergency medical transport response program
- Provide a wide variety of services and technical support that relate to fire prevention, fire protection, emergency medical services, weapons of mass destruction, hazardous materials and enhancement of ecosystems protection.
- Analyze local conditions and fire prevention or protection programs to verify a fire department meets operational conditions and assess a hazardous materials response program to verify capabilities align with program requirements.
Requirements
- Must be a US Citizen.
- Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
- Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
- New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
- Generally, current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level.
- Applicants must meet the Department of Defense (DoD) certification requirements.
- Candidates for firefighter positions must not have reached their 37th birthday by date of appointment.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
- Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required.
- The incumbent is subject to recall for duty 24 hours a day via electronic pager or telephone, unless prior arrangements are made.
- You will be required to possess and maintain a current valid United States driver's license.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination and annually thereafter, a medical employment physical.
- This position is considered Key/Emergency-Essential.
- Supervisors in the executive branch have a heightened personal responsibility for advancing government ethics.
- Must possess current National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) and/or State reciprocal to Virginias State Emergency Medical Technician Basic Current Health Care Provider Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation Certification (CPR Card)
- Must possess and maintain the following Firefighter certifications issued by the Department of Defense (DoD), International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board: FIRE OFFICER IV, FIRE INSPECTOR II and FIRE INSTRUCTOR II.
- The incumbent must obtain Strike Team/Task Force Leader within 24 months of appointment.
Qualifications
- GS-13:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. - GS-12:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. - Must possess and maintain the following Firefighter certifications issued by the Department of Defense (DoD), International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board: FIRE OFFICER IV, FIRE INSPECTOR II and FIRE INSTRUCTOR II.
- You must be certified as a HAZARDOUS MATERIAL INCIDENT - COMMANDER by the Department of Defense (DoD), International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board.
