DEFINITION:
Deputy Probation Officer I

Under general supervision, to investigate cases of juvenile delinquency, status offenders and adult referral for probations; to supervise a caseload of assigned probationers; and to do related work as required.

Deputy Probation Officer II

Under direction, to perform professional case work services for adults and juvenile offenders involving the referral, supervision and rehabilitation of adult and juvenile offenders and/or their families; and to do related work as required.

Deputy Probation Officer III

Under direction, to provide lead supervision and direction for other Department staff; may schedule training and ensure staff compliance with training requirements; to perform the more complex professional case work services for adults and juvenile offenders involving the referral, supervision and rehabilitation of adults and juveniles and/or their families; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Deputy Probation Officer I

This is the entry/training level class for the Probation Officer class series. Incumbents work under relatively close supervision, performing the most basic assignments. As experienced is gained, incumbents perform more independent duties in Intake, Supervision, and Placement Programs. When the requisite experience and certification has been gained, an incumbent may expect reclassification to the Deputy Probation Officer II level.

Deputy Probation Officer II

This is the journey level class for the Probation Officer series. The assigned duties are more technical and complex than those assigned to the Deputy Probation Officer I. These positions are located in Intake, Supervision, and Placement Programs. Duties are performed with minimal guidance and supervision. Incumbents in this classification have Peace Officer status.

Deputy Probation Officer III

This is the advanced working level and lead direction class for the Probation Officer series. Incumbents have responsibility for providing lead direction and may coordinate training programs for other staff. They also perform most technical and complex professional probation casework, as well as the full range of probation assignments. Incumbents in this classification have Peace Officer status.

REPORTS TO Chief Probation Officer, Chief Deputy Probation Officer, and/or Unit Supervisor.

CLASSIFICATIONS SUPERVISED None

The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all the duties listed.

Deputy Probation Officer I:

• Receives adult and juvenile cases assigned by supervisor.
• Conducts an inquiry into the nature of the reported offense or conduct of the client and the circumstances surrounding it.
• Interviews client's family and interested individuals to determine environmental, employment, financial, and marital status.
• Talks to the referring law enforcement officer about the case.
• Prepares and submits a court report outlining pertinent information and recommending a course of action.
• Presents the report in court and answers the judge's questions concerning the case.
• May transport juveniles to/from court.
• Reviews the case files.
• Develops a plan for making regular contacts with the probationer and providing counsel, guidance, and support.
• Holds regular interviews and counseling sessions with probationers.
• Arranges for financial payments to be made.
• Monitors behavior to determine compliance with conditions of probation.
• Records contacts in the case file.
• Reviews progress in the case with supervisor.
• May serve as on-call officer for juvenile problems.
• Serves as intake officer in determining if a juvenile petition should be filed; determines whether court action is necessary.
• Does crisis counseling as required.
• Conducts search and seizure of person, property, and vehicles.
• Advises clients of available community resources.
