DEFINITION:
Deputy Probation Officer I

Under general supervision, to investigate cases of juvenile delinquency, status offenders and adult referral for probations; to supervise a caseload of assigned probationers; and to do related work as required.

Deputy Probation Officer II

Under direction, to perform professional case work services for adults and juvenile offenders involving the referral, supervision and rehabilitation of adult and juvenile offenders and/or their families; and to do related work as required.

Deputy Probation Officer III

Under direction, to provide lead supervision and direction for other Department staff; may schedule training and ensure staff compliance with training requirements; to perform the more complex professional case work services for adults and juvenile offenders involving the referral, supervision and rehabilitation of adults and juveniles and/or their families; and to do related work as required.

REPORTS TO Chief Probation Officer, Chief Deputy Probation Officer, and/or Unit Supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all the duties listed.

Deputy Probation Officer I:

• Receives adult and juvenile cases assigned by supervisor.
• Conducts an inquiry into the nature of the reported offense or conduct of the client and the circumstances surrounding it.
• Interviews client's family and interested individuals to determine environmental, employment, financial, and marital status.
• Talks to the referring law enforcement officer about the case.
• Prepares and submits a court report outlining pertinent information and recommending a course of action.
• Presents the report in court and answers the judge's questions concerning the case.
• May transport juveniles to/from court.
• Reviews the case files.
• Develops a plan for making regular contacts with the probationer and providing counsel, guidance, and support.
• Holds regular interviews and counseling sessions with probationers.
• Arranges for financial payments to be made.
• Monitors behavior to determine compliance with conditions of probation.
• Records contacts in the case file.
• Reviews progress in the case with supervisor.
• May serve as on-call officer for juvenile problems.
• Serves as intake officer in determining if a juvenile petition should be filed; determines whether court action is necessary.
• Does crisis counseling as required.
• Conducts search and seizure of person, property, and vehicles.
• Advises clients of available community resources.
• Cooperates with State and local welfare, mental health, and law enforcement agencies in cases of mutual interest.
• May arrest probationers (adults and juveniles) if necessary.

Deputy Probation Officer II

Carries an assigned caseload in the supervision of adult or juvenile offenders; serves as intake officer in determining if a juvenile petition should be filed; determines whether court action is necessary; interviews adults or juveniles, their families and interested individuals to determine their environmental, employment, financial or marital status; does crisis counseling as required; conducts pre-sentence supplemental and dispositional investigations; formulates plans of probation and presents written and/or oral recommendations to the Court;

monitors behavior to determine compliance with conditions of probation; prepares affidavits of probation violations; conducts search and seizure of person, property and vehicles; conducts individual and group counseling; may advise clients of available community resources; may serve as placement officer (schedules placement visits and evaluates psychological reports, makes assessments for appropriate placement of minors, compiles assessment and treatment plans, works with placement agency, conducts follow up on final results);

may act as on-call officer for juvenile problems; transports individuals in custody when necessary; composes and dictates petitions, correspondence and case histories; maintains Court records and reports; cooperates with State and local welfare, mental health and law enforcement agencies in cases of mutual interest; may arrest probationers (adults and juveniles) if necessary.
