Job Summary: The Ophthalmic Technician / Scribe plays a vital role in both the clinical and documentation aspects of patient care. This role includes performing ophthalmic diagnostic tests, supporting in-office procedures, maintaining equipment and supplies, and acting as a medical scribe to ensure accurate documentation of physician–patient interactions. By combining technical expertise with medical record support, this position maximizes physician efficiency and enhances the overall patient experience.
Position: Ophthalmic Technician/Scribe
Reports To: Ophthalmic Manager
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Key Responsibilities- Greet and assess patients, documenting medical and ocular history in compliance with practice standards.
- Perform ophthalmic testing, including visual acuity, tonometry, refractions, OCT, IOL Master, visual fields, keratometry, A/B scans, and ophthalmic photography.
- Assist physicians during examinations and procedures, ensuring equipment readiness and proper patient flow.
- Administer topical/oral medications under physician supervision.
- Act as a medical scribe during patient visits, recording findings in the EHR and managing documentation workflows.
- Process prescription refills, referrals, and outside chart notes, ensuring timely and accurate completion.
- Educate patients on medication use, pre- and post‑operative care, and follow‑up instructions.
- Maintain inventory, monitor equipment functionality, and ensure clinical areas are prepared and compliant with safety and infection‑control standards.
- Support daily clinic flow by managing charts, handling incoming and outgoing communications, and coordinating with referring providers.
- High school diploma or equivalent required;
Bachelor’s degree in healthcare or completion of Medical Assistant training preferred. - Extensive prior experience in ophthalmic practices and/or medical scribing required.
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) credentials preferred.
- Strong background with ophthalmic equipment, testing, and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Excellent clinical knowledge of ophthalmic testing and procedures.
- Strong medical documentation and EHR proficiency.
- Ability to anticipate physician and patient needs in a fast‑paced clinic.
- Exceptional communication, organizational, and multitasking abilities.
- Commitment to patient confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA/OSHA standards.
- Professional demeanor, adaptability, and strong teamwork skills.
- Ability to remain in a stationary position for 4–8 hours per day.
- Frequent handling of instruments/supplies weighing 10–15 lbs.
- Occasional travel required.
- Must be able to work efficiently in a busy surgical/clinical setting.
