Job Goal

Implement goals and objectives of the schools and the mission of the Special Education Department.

Qualifications

Masters Degree Preferred
Licensed by the State of Massachusetts Department of Health
Three years teaching experience in the appropriate curriculum area

Performance Responsibilities

Evaluate students referred for physical therapy assessments, keep appropriate records, and adjust program according to evaluation results.

Participate in Team evaluation and review meetings for students on caseload.

Write Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), including goals and objectives for students receiving Physical therapy services.

Complete progress reports for all students on caseload, according to the schedule set by school and special education regulations.

Perform re-evaluations of students focusing on areas of educational needs at intervals determined by the individual education plan and/or state special education regulations.

Plan, organize, and conduct physical therapy programs in school setting to facilitate the development and enhance the learning of students with physical challenges.

Treat children with a wide range of disabilities using a variety of modalities, equipment, activities, and tasks in order to improve or facilitate gross motor skill development.

Collaborate with other members of the teaching staff to schedule treatment consistent with the needs and capabilities of the student, especially with respect to school goals and guidelines.

Encourage the development of individual and compensatory skills required for productive participation in school learning process.

Determine supplies and equipment needed for delivery of services.

Essential Functions of the Job

Carry out assessment and evaluation procedures for referred students in accordance with special education regulations and local procedures.
Plan and develop therapeutic intervention goals that are educationally relevant and will be used in students’ educational and home programs.
Establish and maintain a system of documentation that is professional, efficient, and accountable and conforms to state and district policy.
Order and adapt equipment to meet the therapeutic needs of the students.
Maintain and be accountable for the physical therapy equipment budget and inventory of physical therapy supplies.
Communicate results of evaluations and reports of occupational therapy services to the educational staff, parents, and, when appropriate, students and other professionals and agencies.
Attend staffing meetings, IEP reviews, and other school meetings when requested.
Facilitate in-service education and professional development for related service and occupational therapy staff.
Provide consultation to the education system regarding student needs, professional needs, and system needs.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Must be physically able to lift up to 40 lbs independently, or complete 2-person lifts over 40lbs.
Ability to freely move about the buildings to follow-up with students and teachers.
Sit, stand and walk for required periods of time.
Some travel by personal automobile.
