Job Description

Summary:

It is the responsibility of the OB Surgical Technologist to function under the direct supervision of an RN while performing the scrub role on the intraoperative team and/or assisting with other patient care activities, and in accordance with department policies and procedures, to provide for the care needs of the patient with a focus on those treatments and services which do not require state licensure.

In addition to the unit specific duties and responsibilities, OB Techs will provide for the hygiene and personal care of the patient, assist with the activities of daily living, and measure and record vital signs.

Job Requirements , Prerequisites and

Essential Functions:

Job Specifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) required
  • Graduate of a Surgical Technologist program
  • Completion of Certification program and exam preferred, and required for Certified level (CST-Certified Surgical Technician)

Experience:

  • Two years recent hospital or health care facility experience required
  • Two years current OB Surgical Technologist experience preferred

License and

Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required at hire.
  • Integrative Agitation Management (IAMTAC) Required within 30 days of hire.
  • Certified Surgical Tech (CST) preferred at hire.

Prerequisite

Skills:

  • Knowledge of surgical techniques, anatomy and physiology
  • Knowledge of surgical procedures and terminology
  • Knowledge of surgical instrumentation, and equipment and supplies
  • Ability to work independently, interdependently and under supervision within department and hospital policies
  • Good verbal and non-verbal communication skills required
  • Ability to function in an intermittently stressful environment
  • Ability to read, speak, write clearly and legibly, and understand and follow English verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to establish priorities and follow through on assigned tasks.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, work tactfully and effectively with patients, visitors, physicians, team members and other hospital staff.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Proficient with current in-house computer systems.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and contribute positively towards the goals of the team and the organization.
  • Maintain a calm demeanor while working in an atmosphere of conflicting demands.

  • Toddlers: 1 up to 3 years
  • Preschool Children: 3 up to 6 years
  • School Age Children: 6 up to 12 years
  • Adolescents: 12 up to 18 years
  • Early Adults: 18 up to 45 years
  • Middle Adults: 45 up to 61 years
  • Late Adults: 61 up to 80 years
  • Late, Late Adults: 80 years and up

This position is not a patient care position. The incumbent will, in many cases, be the initial face of the organization to a variety of external constituencies. As such, a high degree of professionalism, tact, and communication skills are required.
