Psychiatric Technician (Safety)
Effective July 1, 2025, in accordance with the applicable Memorandum of Understanding, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) was implemented in response to the status of the State budget. PLP 2025 requires each full-time employee in Bargaining Unit 18, and related Excluded, Exempt and Statutory Exempt employees, will have their base salary reduced by 3 percent and will receive 5 PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through June 2027.

Please be advised of the following additional pay benefits individuals may be eligible for:
- Effective May 01, 2022, employees in this class, employed within the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, and who are physically located at and assigned to the Psychiatric Inpatient Program, shall receive a pay differential equivalent to 15% of their monthly base pay.
- Only employees who provide direct patient care, treating patients' in-person, on grounds or at a facility more than 50% of the pay period, are eligible for this pay differential.
Under the general supervision of the Supervising Registered Nurse II/III, Correctional Facility (CF), Unit Supervisor (Safety), or Senior Psychiatric Technician (Safety), the Psychiatric Technician (PT) (Safety) provides a basic level of behavioral and psychiatric nursing care to patients in accordance with health care policies and procedures, Mental Health Program Guide requirements, and Title 22 regulations to patients in the Psychiatric Inpatient Program (PIP).
The PT (Safety), in collaboration with the Registered Nurses (RN), CF and the PIP care team, ensures the delivery of appropriate and timely health care to patients and coordinates interdisciplinary communication to promote continuity of care. Under valid authorization by a provider's order and the delegation and clinical direction of the RN, CF provides support to the PIP care team for daily PIP operations, and communicates effectively with patients, members of the PIP care team, and other members of the health care team.
The PT (Safety) is responsible for addressing the ongoing needs of patients, working with the members of the larger health care team, and promoting the efficient, appropriate, and cost-effective use of health care resources.
Possession of a valid license to practice as a Psychiatric Technician issued by the BVNPTE. (Applicants who are within four months of completing the Psychiatric Technician curriculum accredited by the BVNPTE will be admitted to the examination, but they must secure this license before they will be eligible for appointment.)
