Surgical Technician

This position assists the surgical team in the preparation of surgical procedures in the operating room. The Surgical Technician prepares surgical cases by creating and maintaining a sterile field. They retract and pass instruments, supplies, and medications to surgeons during cases. The role involves performing a variety of technical skills, including the maintenance of supplies. Technicians prepare for each surgical case by accurately checking required supplies and equipment prior to the case.

They assemble appropriate supplies and equipment before operative procedures. The position requires reviewing equipment inventory for specialty as assigned. The technician sets up operative instrumentation and sterile fields for expedient retrieval and utilization. They collect data on assigned surgical cases based on established performance standards of care. Cleaning of equipment and facilities is required as necessary. Housekeeping duties may be performed upon request.

Technicians transport patients according to unit schedules and priorities. They may provide clerical duties as needed. Completing instrument, sponge, needle, and blade counts with the Registered Nurse (RN) according to established standards is essential. The technician sets up and maintains a neat and orderly sterile field, demonstrating careful attention to aseptic technique. They label solutions according to established standards and perform other job-related duties as assigned.
