Qualifications: Currently hold the Monroe County Civil Service title of Network Technician OR be on the current Monroe County Civil Service Network Technician eligible list
Distinguishing Features of the Class: This is a technical position responsible for the installation, maintenance, operation, and repair of computer hardware, software, and network infrastructure. Work involves analyzing network hardware/software issues, testing equipment, managing inventory, and providing technical support. As part of this role, the position is also responsible for maintaining the district website and providing hands‑on hardware and software support for student and staff devices, specifically including Chromebooks and iPads.
The employee reports directly to the Director of Technology.
Typical Work
Activities:
- Helpdesk & End-User Support: Serves as a primary point of contact for technical support, answering helpdesk tickets, phone calls, and walk‑in requests; provides polite, patient, and effective customer service to teachers, administrative staff, and students to resolve day‑to‑day technology issues.
- Chromebook Repair & Maintenance: Diagnoses, troubleshoots, and performs physical and system repairs on Chromebooks (including screen, keyboard, battery, and motherboard replacements) used in 1:1 student deployments.
- iPad Management & Deployment: Configures, deploys, and maintains district iPads, including managing iOS/iPadOS updates, application deployment via Mobile Device Management (MDM), and resolving hardware or operational issues.
- Website Management: Maintains, updates, and manages content for the district website, ensuring accurate information, proper layout, and accessibility.
- Analyzes, tests, and resolves malfunctions in computer systems, microprocessors, network terminals, printers, modems, and data communications hardware/software.
- Performs hardware and software maintenance, minor repairs, setup, and department workstation configurations.
- Maintains an up-to-date inventory of computer equipment, Chromebooks, iPads, and replacement parts, documenting daily system issues.
- Researches, tests, and evaluates new technology, software, and hardware products.
- Ensures the security, integrity, and efficiency of school network systems.
- Consults with vendors regarding repairs and replacement parts.
- Attaches cabling and coordinates with technicians/electricians for hardware installations.
Full Performance, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics: Good knowledge of micro-computer and network product technology, peripheral equipment, and logical operations of data communication devices; working knowledge of Chromebook hardware repairs and ChromeOS management; working knowledge of iPad hardware, iOS/iPadOS troubleshooting, and basic Mobile Device Management (MDM); working knowledge of basic website design/management principles and content updates; working knowledge of data processing methodology, techniques, and documentation of data security;
ability to detect, troubleshoot, and resolve severe micro-computer and network breakdowns; ability to maintain accurate inventory and system records; ability to conduct user workshops and provide technical support; ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with staff and vendors; initiative; patience; dependability; good motor skills; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:
(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Technology, Data Processing, Management Information Systems, plus two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience responsible for the maintenance, configuration or installation of micro-computer hardware and software; OR,
