Salary Range: $46,596-$85,980 (commensurate with experience)
Supervisor: Coordinator of Multilingual and ESL
Classification: Non-Exempt
Contract Length: 11 months (220 Days)

Job Summary
The district interpreter assists the Coordinator of Multilingual and ESL, ESL teachers, content teachers, and administrators to communicate with parents in a language the family understands during the enrollment process. This person assists EL parents with registration, language assessment for identification purposes, upload information on the division's database, and prepares and maintains files and records. This person is also responsible for listening to, understanding, and translating spoken or written statements from one language to another.

Duties

Supports activities within the Petersburg City Public Schools Welcome Center.

Interprets registration documents and supports families as they help their child(ren) transition to a new school environment

Plans and implements school division parent engagement and community efforts that promote and support improved student learning and academic achievement, as well as advancing a culture of respect and value for diverse people in the educational process.

Serves as a link between bilingual families and PCPS schools.

Serves as a support to parents on behalf of students

Check translations of documents to ensure that they are accurate and remain consistent throughout translatable revisions.

Identifies the educational, social, and cultural needs of students and their families that can be met using school, community, or other resources.

Works in collaboration with school administrators and other school leaders to address ethnic and cultural barriers to success.

Supports school staff in meeting the needs of diverse families, often providing or supporting with translation, interpretation and other language-related services. Serves as an advocate on behalf of the student.

Works collaboratively with staff from other departments and agencies.

Communicate effectively to large audiences

Demonstrate great time management working to support several schools

Provides family outreach for parents of students.

Provides information about school division programs and services, including special education and services.

Plans and presents school and parent workshops /trainings.

Works with schools to promote family engagement and inclusivity

Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of educational terminology
  • Ability to take independent initiative, while committing to collaboration
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, and weekends based on school, family, and district needs
  • Ability to employ tact, diplomacy, and sound judgement in dealing with sensitive issues and challenging situations
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to leverage (and when needed learn) technology and software applications to create reports, maintain records, and provide data
  • Ability to create and maintain strong community collaborations
  • Willingness to learn and apply new skills and content
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    High School Diploma or GED, Bachelors Degree preferred
  • Experience:

    Demonstrated ability to speak, understand, read and write fluently in both English and Spanish; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
