Inventory Control Specialist
Under supervision, to plan and participate in the ordering, purchasing and maintaining control of parts, equipment, and tool inventories used to service County vehicles.
Typical Tasks- Orders and purchases parts, equipment, tools and shop consumables such as solvents, lubricants and oils using pre-established contracts or within dollar amount limits established by County policies and procedures;
- Plans, schedules and directs the activities of a parts inventory operation;
- Receives parts and verifies amount and conditions of parts; enters information into inventory data base;
- Distributes parts, equipment, and tools immediately to users or places into appropriate stock location for distribution as needed; updates database as parts are issued;
- Establishes inventory reorder limits/points;
- Conducts physical counts of inventory as required and produces appropriate inventory reports;
- Maintains continuous contact with inventory suppliers;
- Maintains fuel, lubricants, coolants and bulk storage inventories;
- Coordinates the disposal of waste fluids, tires, filters and batteries;
- Monitors obsolete parts control;
- Arranges pick-up and delivery of parts and supplies and may pick up and deliver parts using automobiles, light trucks or forklifts;
- Researches availability and prices of requested parts; keeps abreast of new parts and product lines and maintains parts catalogues and repair manuals;
- Performs cost estimating;
- Trains new personnel, may assign and assist in reviewing the work of others, resolves work related problems, and answers procedural and work-related questions;
- Performs other related duties as required.
Possession of a valid California driver's license is required at the time of appointment and ability to qualify for and maintain an acceptable driving record, which will qualify for a County Driver's Permit. Special Requirement:
Possession of a forklift operators certification within six (6) months of appointment or must vacate the position. Certification must be maintained throughout employment. Training and experience sufficient to have demonstrated practical application of the following knowledge and abilities:

Note:
The knowledge and abilities required to perform this function are typically acquired through training and experience equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade. AND Three (3) years progressively responsible experience in ordering, purchasing, issuing, and inventorying automotive and heavy equipment parts, accessories and tools. OR Two (2) years of experience as an Automotive Attendant in Santa Clara County. Possession of one (1) or more National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications is desirable.
Knowledge of:
Inventory maintenance principles including stocking and warehousing practices;
Parts, equipment, and tools suppliers;
Vehicle repair and maintenance;
Vehicle parts and repair terminology;
Equipment and tools used in vehicle repair and maintenance;
Basic mechanics;
Basic mathematics;
Office practices and procedures including filing systems;
Computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets and/or database;
Charting and record keeping practices. Ability to:
Plan, schedule and maintain a vehicle parts inventory operation;
Use a keyboard with moderate speed and a high level of accuracy;
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of business;
Establish priorities;
Communicate effectively in writing and speaking;
Collect and record data;
Prepare clear and concise reports;
Work independently;
Provide lead direction and guidance, and train others in parts room terminology and procedures;
Maintain related records;
Make timely and accurate decisions;
Move and lift objects that weigh up to 50 pounds.
