Internship: Conservation in Marine Mammal Response

Internship Opportunity at The Marine Mammal Center

The successful candidate will contribute meaningful support to the technology, volunteer engagement, and logistics of our Monterey Bay Operations.

• Schedule is Thursday-Monday.
• Supports the Operations Coordinators with technological and logistical tools that facilitate an efficient stranding response program. This includes tracking response progress, updating the stranding database, supporting volunteer crew with digital record-keeping, and more.
• Assists with the organization and access of cloud-based resources; assists in preparation of a monthly newsletter and assists in preparing material requested by Marketing.
• Assists crews with scheduling and communication as needed.
• Assists with the updating of training and engagement materials for volunteers and staff.
• Engages and presents a final project. Projects can be data based that enhance the intern's understanding of stranding ecology or further increase the accessibility of The Marine Mammal Center's programs to a diverse community.

• An interest and passion for conservation.
• Strong interest and ability to use computer-based programs and comfort learning new software and database programs.
• A desire to work as part of a team.
• A desire to build skills in outreach and communication.
• Proficiency in a language other than English preferred.
• Experience working with volunteers and diverse communities.

• Ability to remain in a stationary position and move in an office environment for extended periods of time.
• Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment 90% of the time.
• Ability to drive/operate a vehicle. Public transportation between housing accommodations and site is limited.

• Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases.
• Working in outdoor weather conditions and elements possible depending on intern's interests.
• Working in an office environment with rotating groups of volunteer crews.
• Housing is provided through a network of volunteers with The Marine Mammal Center. Most of these volunteers have pets (cats and dogs). Pet and house sitting may be requested in exchange for housing.
