Schedules, leads, and coordinates the daily activities of a defined unit on an assigned shift. Oversees the delivery of optimal, safe, quality nursing care and regulatory compliance while providing leadership to staff by being an effective resource, role model, mentor, and change agent for their assigned department. Directs and oversees a team of nurses and support staff, ensuring adherence to appropriate federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines, policies, and nursing protocols and procedures.
Coordinates services with other patient care units to ensure patient flow and provides direct specialty nursing services and patient care as appropriate. Supervises and directs the activities of various levels of assigned personnel using both professional and supervisory discretion and independent judgment.
- Bachelor’s Degree in nursing or equivalent combination of education/related experience – Required
- Master’s Degree – Preferred
- Five years’ technical experience – Preferred
- Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of practice – Required
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from approved vendor per AH policy – Preferred
- Clinical specialty and/or nursing administration certification – Preferred
- AHA-BLS or ARC-BLS – Required
- AHA-ACLS or ARC-ALS – Required
- AHA-PALS or ARC-PALS – Required
- Collaborates with entire care team to meet needs of patient and family through continuum of care. Intercedes as a patient advocate. Coordinates nursing care with other healthcare disciplines and assists in integrating services across the continuum of care.
- Consults with staff to validate decisions, care plans, patient education, plan and interpretation of hospital policies and procedures, and assists staff with prioritization.
- Actively participates in hiring, promotion, and discipline of employees. Assumes responsibility for staffing and scheduling personnel. Completes performance evaluations for all shift employees. Contributes to the professional growth and development of staff on the unit through education.
- Prioritizes patient care needs and staffing assignments on an ongoing basis, making adjustments as needed to maintain patient safety. Makes assignments based upon competency and experience of the nurse. Provides clinical direction to staff and evaluates the level of care provided by the unit nursing staff.
- Consistently meets all regulatory and hospital requirements. Conducts rounds/audits to ensure compliance with required standards and communicates findings to Nurse Manager for corrective actions.
- Provides administrative support to the Nurse Manager. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
