NICU Clinical Nurse – Maternal Child Health

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Clinical Nurse – Maternal Child Health role provides direct patient care in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act for assigned patients in maternal child departments including Perinatology, LDR, Mother/Baby, LDRP and NICU. The nurse collaborates with other disciplines of the health care team to ensure the delivery of safe, timely and appropriate quality patient care. This includes providing physical assessments, nursing interventions, pain management, medication administrations, specimen collection, meeting nutritional and emotional needs, and education and discharge needs of the patients assigned.

Utilizes the nursing process based on evidence-based best practices to meet patient care needs. Evaluates and adjusts the nursing care process as necessary with consultation as needed and confers with the appropriate resource personnel when making ethical/legal/medical dilemma decisions. Maintains a working knowledge of departmental and hospital standards, policies, and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned.

In addition to the above responsibilities, the Clinical Nurse II/III/IV is involved in Hoag Committee/Council with at least 50% attendance, communicates quarterly to UPC (Unit Practice Council) on committee/council work, and completes four supplemental activities a year.

Schedule and Work Expectations

  • Positions currently available:
    Full Time, 3rd Shift (Nights)
  • Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (Night Shift: 7:00PM - 7:30AM)
  • Hours/Pay Period: 72 (Full Time)

Salary Range (Based on years of experience, education, and specialty certifications)

  • Level I: $48.35 - $79.07/ hourly
  • Level II: $50.75 - $82.96/ hourly
  • Level III: $55.97 - $87.17/ hourly
  • Level IV: $58.77 - $91.51/ hourly
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Sixteen (16) hours of lactation education and four (4) hours of demonstrated bedside hands-on competencies within 6 months of hire required.
  • Level I
    • BSN required or BSN program started within one year of hire date and attained within two years of starting the BSN program
    • 6 months of RN experience at acute care inpatient facility preferred
  • Level II
    • BSN required
    • 1 year of NICU RN experience required
  • Level III
    • BSN required
    • National Certification required (ex: RNC-NIC)
    • 3 years of NICU RN experience required
  • Level IV
    • MSN required
    • National Certification required (ex: RNC-NIC)
    • 4 years of NICU RN experience required

License Required

  • Registered Nurse in the State of California - Current and in good standing.

Certifications Required

  • Current BLS (AHA) certification upon hire, and

  • Additional department specific certification requirements as follows:

    • NICU – 6 East:

      • NRP Certification, and

      • All Clinical Nurses in NICU – 6 East (Newport) who work with low birth weight babies must either:

        • Complete the Small Baby Care Specialist Program within 6 months of hire, or

        • Have at least one year of experience within the past five years caring for extremely low birth weight infants (substitution subject to leadership approval)

    • Irvine NICU:

      • NRP Certification, and

      • Either:

        • Complete the Small Baby Care Specialist Program within 6 months of hire, or

        • Have at least one year of experience within the past five years caring for extremely low birth weight infants (substitution subject to leadership approval)

Certifications Preferred

  • NICU: NICU didactic course and STABLE.
